WE HAVE INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, VERY EXCITING NEWS!!!

Okay… it may not be news to all of you because Dr. Ashley has been WAY too excited and has already spilled the beans to more than a few people.

But now we can FINALLY make it official…

🎉🐴 GEM CITY EQUINE IS WELCOMING ANOTHER VETERINARIAN!!! 🐴🎉

Dr. Alyssa McAdams(Willibey) grew up in the small town of Cattaraugus, NY. She began riding after receiving lessons as a Christmas gift, and eventually competed in local hunter jumper shows, 4-H events, as well as local dressage shows. Her undergraduate degree was completed at The Ohio State University. After working as an Equine Veterinarian Assistant in Xenia, OH for 4 years, she attended St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. Her year of clinical training was completed at Texas A&M University and she was awarded her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in January 2026. She completed an internship at Tennessee Equine Hospital where she had training in internal medicine, reproductive services, emergency medicine, neonatal care, and surgery. Dr. Alyssa is interested in Wellness and Preventative Medicine, Rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine.

In her spare time she enjoys traveling (especially internationally), reading, and spending time with her husband, dog, and cat. Dr. Alyssa is looking forward to returning to and caring for your horses in the Greater Miami area!

We’re VERY late with this introduction, but better late than never!

Introducing Erin—the other half of our dynamic office duo, working hard to keep things running smoothly and, most importantly, keep Dr. Ashley organized and in line.

Erin brings more than 20 years of veterinary medicine experience, with a special love for emergency medicine, critical care, and rehabilitation. Outside of work, she’s a proud dog mom of five and competes in dock diving, conformation, and Fast CAT.

She’s also a lifelong horse lover and hopes to add one of her own to the family soon!

We’re so happy to have Erin as part of the Gem City Equine team!

A message from our team:

We know there is a shortage of equine veterinarians in our area, and we understand how stressful it can be when your horse needs care—especially in an emergency.

Dr. Ashley has proudly served the Miami Valley Region for 10 years and has watched the veterinary landscape change significantly during that time. Rather than simply accepting the shortage, she is actively working to grow Gem City Equine, add to our team, and expand our ability to serve this community.

We also want to be transparent about how Gem City Equine operates and why.

Routine and preventative medicine are the foundation of our practice. Vaccinations, dental care, wellness exams, lameness evaluations, diagnostics, and all of those seemingly ordinary visits allow us to know our patients, their medical histories, their environments, and the people caring for them. Those relationships take time to build, but they greatly improve the quality of care your horse receives. That becomes especially important during an emergency. It is safer and more effective to treat a horse when we already understand their history, medications, normal behavior, environment, and ongoing concerns.

We are not building Gem City Equine around emergency calls. We are building it around relationships. We absolutely provide emergency care for our established clients. What we cannot do is serve as the region’s emergency practice.

If we are not your primary veterinarian, we cannot provide emergency care for your animals. And if we aren’t your veterinarian, that really is okay. There are wonderful veterinarians in our area, and we respect your choice about who cares for your horses. We simply ask for that same understanding in return:

If we can’t be your regular vet, please don’t plan on us being your emergency vet.

That being said, we are proud to be one of the few practices in the area still accepting new clients. Feel free to call us and set up a new client appointment at 937-345-2922.

Potomac Horse Fever Season Is Here

The Miami Valley sees numerous cases of Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) every year, which is why we have always recommended PHF vaccination for every horse as part of their complete, comprehensive preventative care.

We typically see PHF from mid-summer through mid-fall, but our first case this year was diagnosed—and hospitalized—a few months ago. Thankfully, he responded well to treatment, made a full recovery, and was able to return home.

🐌 What is PHF?
PHF is caused by Neorickettsia risticii and is not spread horse-to-horse. Horses become infected by accidentally ingesting infected aquatic insects, such as caddisflies and mayflies. These insects are associated with freshwater and can also be attracted to barn lights.

🐌 Watch for:
Fever • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Diarrhea • Colic • Laminitis

PHF can also cause abortion in pregnant mares. Early treatment is critical, and unfortunately, PHF can be fatal.

💉 What about vaccination?
The vaccine isn’t 100% effective at preventing PHF, but it can decrease the severity of illness and increase the chance of survival.

💡 Around the barn: Keep lights away from feed and water sources when possible, since lights attract the insects that can transmit PHF, and always provide clean, fresh drinking water.

If your horse received their last PHF vaccine 3 months ago or longer, now is a great time to schedule their booster. Give Gem City Equine a call with questions or to get your horse protected!

We’re slowly making our new office feel like home!

A wonderful client stopped by, noticed our walls were looking a little bare, and generously donated a few beautiful canvases. That inspired us to start a Patient Wall! Dr. Ashley has already added a few favorite photos, but we’d love to fill it with many more familiar faces.

Is there something in the water? Was it the full moon? Or are horses just REALLY committed to keeping us busy?

Whatever the reason, we’ve seen a massive increase in lacerations over the last few weeks. And because horses have an incredible talent for finding the ONE thing they can hurt themselves on, here’s your reminder to do a quick safety check around the barn and pasture:

✔️Tape or cover exposed bucket handles
✔️ Check fence boards for broken boards, nails and sharp edges
✔️ Watch gate and stall latches for anything that can catch skin
✔️ Pick up loose wire, metal, boards and other debris
✔️ Take a walk around your horse’s space and look for anything they could possibly find a way to hurt themselves on

And when you’ve checked EVERYTHING, fixed EVERYTHING, and your horse STILL manages to do something silly…Feel free to give us a call. We’ll bring the sutures.

A huge thank you to the Ohio Paint Horse Club for hosting the OPHC Buckeye Bonanza & All Breed Show! We had an amazing time cheering on our clients and patients, as well as our own future rockstar!

Although there were many blue ribbons, class wins, money and buckles, the best prize of the weekend had to go to Fowler Performance Horses and Oppo Taco, who, after a big win, earned a toy of her namesake!

Congratulations to everyone who competed this weekend! If you’re looking to help your horse stay healthy, comfortable, and performing at their best all season long, we’d love to be part of your team. Gem City Equine will be on-site at the World Equestrian Center this weekend for the OPHC Buckeye Bonanza- APHA & All Breed Show

We’ll be providing Shockwave therapy, MagnaWave therapy, lameness evaluations,and medical care and veterinary support for any unexpected needs

We know there’s been a lot of conversation surrounding the new health protocols for the Clark County Fair, and we understand that many of you have questions. We wanted to share what we know in hopes of easing some concerns and helping everyone feel confident going into fair week.

‼️ At this time, there have been no recently reported cases of EHV-1 or EHV-4 in the Greater Miami Valley Area‼️

We have been in contact with local and state veterinary professional resources, and based on the information currently available, we are recommending the standard biosecurity practices that should be followed at any horse show or event.

The additional requirements for this year’s fair were established by the Champions Center. The Clark County 4-H Board reached out to ask if we could assist in meeting these requirements.

As strong supporters of youth equestrian programs and local horse shows, Gem City Equine is happy to assist in any way we can to provide peace of mind and help ensure our kids have the opportunity to participate safely.

We encourage everyone to work together, practice good biosecurity, and enjoy a safe and successful fair season.
