Founded in 1897, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington is the largest and oldest animal welfare organization in Southwest Washington. HSSW is an independent nonprofit with campuses in Vancouver and Longview, Washington. Each year, HSSW cares for thousands of pets. We provide shelter to lost and stray animals, a refuge from abuse and neglect, essential medical care, and a lifesaving second chance. Our commitment to the pets and people of Southwest Washington extends beyond the shelter, providing critical support to pets and families with Wellness Clinics, pet food assistance, spay/neuter, emergency boarding, financial assistance, and other programs that help keep families together. We also own and operate ReTails Thrift Store. Giving new life to gently-used items, every purchase and donation at ReTails supports our lifesaving work with the animals. A huge thank you to Team Depot for spending Monday with us at our Vancouver Campus🧡

The Home Depot volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a huge campus clean-up! While they were here, our Facilities Technician, Kevin, got to show off the $5,000 specialty plumbing tool The Home Depot Foundation generously funded through a grant. This tool means we can now handle plumbing work in-house, saving thousands of dollars that can go right back to the animals in our care🔧

You've still got time to be a part of the Fred Meyer & QFC Howl-O-Ween Pet Food Drive!

Throughout October, you can donate new, unopened pet food, pet supplies, and toys to help stock the shelves for our CHOW Program. Through CHOW, we provide pet food assistance to local families and individuals who need a little extra help caring for their pets, helping keep beloved animals in their homes and out of the shelter.

HOW TO DONATE
⭐Purchase new, unopened pet food, pet supplies, or toys at a participating store.
⭐Drop your donation in the collection bin near the store entrance or customer service desk.
⭐Every donation helps provide care, comfort, and nourishment for local pets in need.

Happy Tails to Supreme Cat of the United States (Scotus) and Taco Bell Beefy Five-Layer Burrito (Beef)! Check out this great update from the owner of these two cats, formerly known at the shelter as Lynx and Cascade.

"I met Supreme Cat of the United States (Scotus) at the Kitty Palooza event in 2025. I wasn’t looking to adopt any specific kitten, but he became my best friend that day. He had a LOT to say, was very confident in his new environment, and I could just tell he would keep life interesting. When I went back one year later to adopt Taco Bell Beefy Five-Layer Burrito (Beef), I thought he was the cutest baby ever. He was very fluffy and had that really cute kitten stare, as if he were shocked by his own existence. He was immediately very playful, but also receptive to affection. Both of them brought the exact type of energy I was looking for at the time of adoption.

Both cats are doing amazing! They settled in very quickly and are now best friends. Scotus spends his days sunbathing on windowsills and committing theft (it’s okay, I forgive him). Beef is my adventure cat and enjoys going on coffee runs in his bubble backpack. They are very good around people and other cats, which has led me to try fostering kittens. Overall, they’ve been the perfect additions to my family.

What I love most about Scotus is how affectionate he is. He is always ready to join me for a nap, especially when he gets to be the little spoon. I also love how vocal he gets when he wants attention or to keep me on schedule (he will never let me forget about feeding time or bedtime). What I love most about Beef is that, despite having grown so much since I adopted him, he still acts like a baby. He has kept all the cute kitten habits he had back in May, and I hope it never ends. I also love how relaxed he is in any situation. I can handle him, take him on adventures, or do just about anything else, and he will never complain, opting to purr instead.

My pets are my family and closest friends. They keep me grounded and happy. I can’t imagine what life would be like without them."

Yesterday was a full house, and we mean that in the best way🥹 47 cats and kittens found their forever families, and we are so grateful for this community!

Kitty Palooza continues tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, 12-6PM at both our Vancouver and Longview campuses! We’ve still got lots of available cats and kittens waiting for homes. Availability changes fast, so check hssw.org/cats for the most current list of who’s still available before you head over. If you have any questions, please check out the FAQs post we’ve pinned to our profile.

Reminders: adoptions are first-come, first-served, processed in the order you arrive, and you can meet up to 2 cats or kittens per visit.

This Friday & Saturday, October 16-17, we'll be waiving adoption fees for all cats & kittens! Adoption hours are 12-6 PM. Visit hssw.org/cats to check out all our adoptable cats & kittens.

Read below for common Q&As. Due to the volume of calls, messages, and people attending our event, we're unable to answer any other questions about Kitty Palooza. Thanks for your understanding!

KITTY PALOOZA FAQs

✨What time do adoptions start? ➡Adoptions are open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and are first-come, first-served.

✨ Are there any costs? ➡ While adoption fees are waived, pet licensing fees may still apply depending on the county where you reside. Learn more about licensing fees at hssw.org/licensing

✨ Can I learn more about a pet before I come in? ➡ Yes! Visit our website to view each animal's profile, including age, gender, weight, assumed breed, personality notes, and more.

✨ How do I know if a pet is still available? ➡ If a pet is listed on our adoption page, they're available. If you no longer see them, they've likely found a home.

✨ Can I place a hold on a pet? ➡ No. We do not offer adoption holds. If there's a specific pet you'd like to meet, we recommend arriving early.

✨ Can I adopt more than one animal? ➡ Yes! You can meet up to two animals. We even encourage you to adopt kittens in pairs, if you are able☺️

✨ What is included when I adopt an animal? ➡ All pets at HSSW are spayed or neutered before they can be adopted. They are also microchipped and vaccinated. Vaccination history will be provided at time of adoption.

✨ My question isn't on this list. How can I get it answered? ➡ If you are planning on coming to adopt an animal, our Adoptions Team can answer any other questions you have onsite when it's your turn in line for meeting and/or adopting an animal.
