Most owners assume veterinarians receive deep, high-quality training in dog behavior and training.

They do not.

The average DVM receives less than one required formal behavior course in veterinary school.

That is not hyperbole. A recent review of U.S. veterinary school catalogs found that only 12 of 32 AVMA-accredited veterinary colleges — 37% — required a behavior course. Seven offered behavior as an elective, and 13 did not offer a behavior course at all in the reviewed catalogs. (MDPI)

So the median veterinary student may graduate with zero required formal behavior courses.

That should stop owners cold.

Because the average owner assumes their vet is not only a medical authority, but also a training authority.

That assumption is wrong.

Your vet may be excellent at medicine but most likely will have little to no meaningful training in actual dog training and behavior modification.

And this doesn’t even approach the reality that whatever training your vet might receive, will absolutely be 100% force-free, positive-only, ideologically captured, non-reality, and non-scientifically-based horsesh*t.

Which means whatever they do know, will be dangerously counter-productive, management and medication focused “training” slop, that promises to steer you away from practical, proven, common sense training which could actually benefit you and your dog.

The upshot?

Ask your vet for medical advice, not for training advice.

F**k all those who feel entitled to tell you what’s best for you and your dog.

Because here’s the truth.

They don’t give a f**k about you, or your dog, they only care about their own worldview being the only worldview allowed to exist.

You using tools and training which don’t align with that worldview is the problem, and that’s a problem they can’t abide.

The good news? You don’t need their permission or acceptance. So let them abide your firm, unapologetic, “Go f**k yourself.”

And bonus points if you do it with a condescending smile and a skip in your step. :)

Paws up, Packmates! We will NOT be having the pack walk this Saturday due to the July 4th holiday. Please be safe and remember these helpful tips:
*Keep your pets indoors
*Leash your pet for potty breaks, even in a fenced backyard
*Ensure your pets are wearing identification including your phone number
*Play calming music or other background noise such as a familiar, funny sitcom
*Contact your vet now for calming medications if needed
*Consider using pet-safe calming essential oils in a diffuser and Adaptil calming spray for extra support (message me for links if you need)
*If your pet gets lost, contact shelters across the region and check their websites regularly - you'd be surprised how far scared pets can travel in a short amount of time
We follow all of these tips here in the Pack!
Wishing you all a happy 4th! 🐾🐾

You never know what you'll encounter on the pack walk! And that's the whole point: we can't prepare the world for our dogs, but we can prepare our dogs for the world!

Last weekend we wound up in the middle of the Humane Society walk/run for the animals in downtown Vancouver. We encountered people running with their dogs, cheerleaders with bells and pompoms, dense crowds and intense distractions. And would you believe this group of formerly reactive dogs were the best behaved ones there!

So of course, we had to do an honorary cross of the finish line!

If you want to know what a group of badass dog guardians is - you're looking at 'em!

There is NOTHING we can't do as a pack. This is what the dogs show us, every walk.

To all of my incredible clients, past and present: today I am beyond thankful for YOU.

If you have ever leashed up your dog and come to the pack walk, or booked a session, or attended a class, or practiced your circuits in your living room (IYKYK 😉), you have taken the brave steps to live your best life with your dog - no matter what behavior issues you and your dog are facing. For that, I am profoundly grateful and forever inspired by you. I am on a mission to help people live their best lives with their dogs, and I couldn't do it without YOU.

For loving your dogs enough to TRY (and try again), for showing up at training sessions and pack walks, for putting in the work day after day, for facing your fears (and helping your dogs face theirs), for trusting the process and for trusting ME - I am deeply thankful, so proud of you, and humbled always by how amazing you are.

THANK YOU for allowing me to walk alongside on your journey with your dogs. YOU are my inspiration, my purpose, and you make the world a better place. And YOU are my favorite people.

Hug your dogs for me. ❤️🐾❤️🐾
