🐾 Joey's Journey: One Year Strong! 🐾

Joey, a retired racing greyhound adopted in 2019, was referred to our Oncology Service in June 2025 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

To treat his cancer and relieve his pain, Joey underwent amputation of the affected limb. After surgery, he received six rounds of carboplatin chemotherapy, a treatment designed to target microscopic cancer cells that may have spread beyond the bone tumor. The goal is to help slow the progression of the disease while maintaining an excellent quality of life.

Joey tolerated chemotherapy with minimal side effects and graduated from his IV chemotherapy protocol in November 2025. Today, nearly one year later, he continues to do wonderfully at home and is just as happy and speedy as ever on three legs. He is currently doing well on low-dose oral chemotherapy.

We are grateful to Joey and his family for allowing us to share his story and for trusting our Oncology team with his care. ❤️
📚 Bonus fun fact: Joey even has his own coloring book available on Amazon! https://a.co/d/09k9Yym5

The Cultural Ambassadors of Pacific Northwest Pet ER and Specialty Center are proud to introduce our new Vet Med Hero Spotlight, a quarterly recognition created to celebrate team members who help make our hospital a positive place for pets, clients, and coworkers.

This program is designed to highlight individuals who consistently make a difference through compassion, teamwork, and dedication.

We are proud to announce our very first Vet Med Hero Spotlight recipient: Julia

Julia is an amazing CSR who consistently brings kindness, dedication, and calm support to both clients and coworkers, helping create a better experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

Congratulations, Julia, and thank you for everything you do.

Izzy developed a sudden onset of weakness in her back legs, especially on the left side. An MRI of her spine revealed an acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion (ANNPE), also known as a “missile disc” or hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion (HNPE). This occurs when the liquid center of an intervertebral disc is expelled at high velocity, causing a bruise to the spinal cord.

The good news is that most dogs with this condition improve with supportive care and physical rehabilitation rather than surgery. Izzy was seen and treated through our Neurology Service by Dr. Kowal, and we are thrilled to share that she has made significant progress and is now back to walking on her own! 💜

Way to go, Izzy!

If your pet is experiencing neurological concerns such as weakness, difficulty walking, seizures, or mobility changes, our Neurology Service is here to help. Clients can book a neurology consult online or by calling our hospital directly.

Bladder stones are a common issue in small, white, fluffy dogs and cute Yuki is no exception! In July of 2025, she had surgery to remove her stones at her primary care doctor, but in April of 2026, she began to have blood in her urine again. She was seen through the PacWest Emergency service where further imaging documents a recurrence of her stones, but in a surprising fashion.

When a bladder is closed surgically, sometimes suture material passes into the bladder itself. The majority of time this is no big deal, but in rare cases, sometimes these sutures can actually serve as a scaffold for new stones to form back quickly; Yuki is one such rare case.

When her ultrasound showed stones that were not moving with gravity and closely adhered to her wall, she was referred to the PacWest internal medicine service over concerns of suture dependent stones. A minimally invasive scoping procedure was performed to remove the stones without having to take her back to surgery!
