Labor Day Weekend: PNW Edition🌧️☁️

We may be trading sunshine for rain clouds this year, but holiday weekend pet safety still matters!

A few reminders before the long weekend:

🍫 Keep unsafe people foods out of reach
💊 Secure medications, purses & overnight bags
🗑️ Keep trash, bones, skewers & food scraps away from curious pets
🚪 Watch doors and gates when guests are coming and going
🏷️ Double-check collars, ID tags & contact information
🚗 Use a secure carrier or restraint when traveling
🌧️ Keep pets leashed and visible on rainy walks & adventures

And remember: Pacific Northwest Pet ER & Specialty Center is open 24/7 for emergency care, including holidays.

Stay safe, stay dry & enjoy the long weekend!

We recently hosted our annual Triage Roleplay Workshop, giving our team the opportunity to come together, practice different triage scenarios, sharpen their skills, and learn from one another.

Emergency medicine keeps us on our toes, so hands-on practice like this helps our team feel prepared for whatever may come through our doors. And of course, we make sure to have a little fun while we’re at it! 🐾🩺

This week, Pacific Northwest Pet ER & Specialty Center celebrates 5 years.

Five years of incredible patients, unforgettable stories, long days and late nights, difficult goodbyes, happy reunions, and a team that continues to show up for pets and the people who love them every single day.

We are so grateful for every family who has trusted us with their beloved pets and every team member who has helped make PacWest what it is today.

Here’s to 5 years of caring, growing, and making a difference together. 🎂🐾💙

This quarter, we're excited to recognize one of our incredible Veterinary Technicians, Lexie in our Vet Med Spotlight.

One of the things she loves most about veterinary medicine is the opportunity to utilize her skills fully. From providing compassionate nursing care to performing advanced technical procedures like central line placement, she takes pride in helping our patients through some of their most critical moments.

One of the most rewarding experiences for her is seeing a very sick patient finally eat for the first time during their hospital stay. Outside of work, her friends know her as the one who can absolutely belt out rock songs at karaoke.

Thank you for your dedication, compassion, and the exceptional care you provide to every patient. We are proud to have you as part of the Pacific Northwest Pet ER & Specialty Center team.

Zeppelin presented to the Internal Medicine department for inappropriate urination/urinating in her sleep.

After a urinary tract infection was ruled out, our Internal Medicine team recommended an ultrasound to take a closer look for bladder stones or anatomical abnormalities. With normal ultrasound results, Zeppelin’s signs were most consistent with Urethral Sphincter Mechanism Incompetence (USMI), a condition commonly seen in older, spayed female dogs. USMI occurs when the muscles responsible for keeping the urethra closed do not maintain enough pressure, resulting in urine leakage, particularly while resting or sleeping.

Thankfully, USMI can often be successfully managed with medication. We’re happy to help Zeppelin get back to more comfortable, restful snoozes!

Ruby presented to the neurology service for an abnormal growth on the top of her head that had been present since birth. After an MRI, Ruby was diagnosed with a meningoencephalocele, which is a congenital condition where the brain protrudes through a hole in the skull.

In order to try to prevent future trauma to the area or leakage of spinal fluid, surgery was performed by Dr. Kowal to remove the abnormal tissue. Ruby recovered great from surgery and is back to her puppy ways. She's available for adoption and currently looking for her forever home. She is being cared for and fostered through PAWS: Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter.
