Your lack of budgeting is no longer everyone elses problem..... the horse market FINALLY has made it profitable to make nice horses, and if you don't support that, then you support garbage markets that led to the reduction in quality horses being made and an influx of low quality horses hitting slaughter pipelines.

Your horse is a reflection of your standards… not your intentions. Everyone wants a soft, broke, responsive horse.

But wanting it and training for it are two different things.Because horses don’t learn from what you meant to do…They learn from what you allow.

👉 Let them lean on the bit… they’ll keep leaning.
👉 Let them ignore your leg… they’ll keep ignoring it.
👉 Let them get distracted… they’ll stay disconnected.

It’s not about being harsh.
It’s about being consistent.

Clear expectations.
Consistent follow-through.
Every single ride.

Because the little things you let slide today…
are the big problems you’re fixing tomorrow.

Raise your standard.
Your horse will rise with it.

“That horse is too old, I want something younger for my kid”
I’m SO TIRED OF HEARING THIS STATEMENT… from parents of small beginner children.
Buy the old horse with the big knee. Trust me. That horse will give your kid all the confidence in the world and keep them SAFE.
Don’t go down the “they can grow together” cute fairytale in your head- that’s called, you better have good health insurance on standby… these are 1200lbs animals, not “puppies.”
And this may be a NEWS FLASH but horses don’t become solid citizens with 90 days of training, months of training, or even 2-3 years of training… that horse you want to take care of your kid should have NO LESS than a decade or longer under saddle- yes that means you shouldn’t be looking at anything younger than a teenager! The younger the kid, the older the horse should be.
Scared of maintenance? Get over it. Maintenance is cheaper than an ER bill will be. Horses don’t make good horses by being pasture pets. Good horses are made with YEARS of work poured into them, which means to wear and tear. If you are looking at a sound maintenance free “kid horse,” you arent looking at one thats been rode enough to be broke enough for 5yo suzy.
In my 18 year long career in the horse industry, and over 1800 head of horses sold, I can count on my fingers how many legitimate kid horses I have come across under 10 years of age. I only know of 2 that were under the age of 5 years old. REAL Kid horses are NOT as common as Facebook may lead you to believe.
To conclude, Don’t overlook the 20yo solid horse who needs a Previcox a day, that will take care of your 4yo child. The oldies are goodies for a reason. If they dont require maintenance, they arent broke enough for your kid. I mean how often do you need Tylenol?

A dressage trainer once told me:
“If you allow your horse to be a tourist, it will be a tourist.” —that really stuck with me

If you let them look everywhere, take in everything, and focus on anything other than you don’t be surprised when that shows up in your rides.

I don’t think a lot of people realize that most bad habits don’t start big.
They start as small things we allow:
• drifting through the shoulder
• looking out of the arena
• ignoring light cues
• tuning you out for a few seconds at a time

Over time, those little moments add up.

Before long, it’s not just “looking around.”
It’s a horse that’s bracey, distracted, late to respond, or hard to keep between the reins and legs.

99% of the issues I see didn’t come from a bad horse they came from inconsistency and missed moments.

The good news?
The fix usually starts just as small.

Attention.
Straightness.
Responsiveness.

What you allow today is what you’ll be training tomorrow.
