Don’t Let Your Horse Sit All Winter

For a lot of riders up north, winter means shorter days, frozen ground, snow, ice, and several months when consistent riding can be difficult or impossible.

Down here in the South, it’s just the opposite. Winter is some of our best riding and training weather.

If your horse is likely to spend most of the winter sitting, this can be the perfect time to send them south for training. Instead of losing several months, your horse can spend the winter getting fit, improving their foundation, and becoming better schooled for the job you want them to do.

Then when spring finally arrives where you live, you aren’t starting over with a horse that has been sitting all winter. Your horse comes home fit, schooled, and ready for you to enjoy the riding season.

I’m scheduling horses for winter training now. If you’ve been considering sending your horse for training, now is a good time to start planning.

There is a difference between knowing how to perform a maneuver and understanding the process a horse has to go through while learning it.

In this video, I'm working on flying lead changes, but the bigger lesson applies to almost anything we teach a horse. I'm watching the shoulders, hips, bend, resistance, and response to each cue—not because every piece has to be perfect immediately, but because those pieces tell me whether the horse is moving toward the answer.

That is where experience makes a difference. After working enough horses through the same learning process, you begin to recognize what matters, what needs to be corrected, what can wait, and when you simply need to trust the process.

A lot of people believe a horse should never be ridden before five years old. I understand the concern. A young horse’s body is still developing, and too much work, too much intensity, or the wrong kind of training can absolutely create problems.

But waiting is not automatically harmless.

This three-and-a-half-year-old mare is already developing poor muscular patterns. She travels heavily on her front end, carries her back hollow, resists through her shoulders, and struggles to engage her hindquarters. If those patterns are allowed to continue until she is five, I may not be protecting her. I may be allowing the very problems I want to prevent to become more firmly established.

In this video, I explain why choosing an arbitrary starting age can be just as problematic as working a young horse too hard. I also demonstrate how carefully controlled, low-intensity riding can help this mare strengthen her back, lift her shoulders, use her hindquarters, and learn to carry herself and a rider more correctly.

This is not an argument for pushing young horses harder. It is an argument for looking at the individual horse, balancing the risks, and making decisions based on what that horse’s body needs right now.

The question should not simply be, “Is she old enough to ride?”

The better question is, “What does this horse need today to have the best chance of staying comfortable and useful tomorrow?”

**What age should you start a horse? I think we are asking the wrong question.**

There is a lot of discussion about what age a horse should be before training begins. People point to growth plates, joints that have not fully matured, and the fact that a young horse's skeleton is still developing. Those are legitimate considerations. I am not arguing that skeletal maturity doesn't matter, and I am certainly not arguing that young horses should be worked hard simply because we want to get started sooner. What I disagree with is taking one part of physical development, attaching an arbitrary age to it, and then treating that age as though it answers every question about what is best for every horse.

A horse's muscular system is developing at the same time as its skeletal system. How that horse moves, carries its weight, uses its back, engages its hindquarters, and loads its front end all influence the forces being placed on that developing skeleton. A horse that is consistently hollow through the back, heavy on the front end, restricted through the shoulders, and poorly engaged behind is not simply waiting for its skeleton to mature. It is practicing that movement every day while its muscles and body are developing around it.

That is an important part of this discussion that often gets overlooked.

**The muscular and skeletal systems are designed to work together.** The skeleton provides the framework, but the muscles support and move that framework. Muscles cross joints, stabilize those joints, move the limbs, support the spine, and help control how weight and force travel through the horse's body. When the muscular system is developing correctly, it helps the skeleton carry weight and absorb the forces created through movement. When the muscular system is weak, unbalanced, or developing around poor movement patterns, those forces can be distributed very differently.

Think about a horse that consistently carries too much weight on its front end. The problem isn't limited to having weak muscles somewhere else in the body. That muscular imbalance changes how the skeleton is being loaded with every step. The shoulders, knees, fetlocks, pasterns, coffin joints, feet, and structures of the back can all be subjected to forces that would be distributed differently if the horse were using its body more efficiently. Thousands of repetitions of that movement eventually matter.

The same thing happens through the back and hindquarters. The muscles of the topline, abdomen, pelvis, and hindquarters help stabilize the spine and allow the horse to support and propel its body. If those muscles are poorly developed and the horse habitually travels with a dropped or hollow back, the skeleton underneath that muscular system does not somehow remain unaffected. The muscles and skeleton function as a unit.

This is why poor muscular development can contribute to skeletal problems rather than simply existing alongside them. Bone responds to the forces placed upon it, and joints function within the movement created and controlled by the surrounding muscles. If the muscular system repeatedly allows the skeleton to be loaded poorly, the horse can experience abnormal or excessive stress in particular areas. If there is already a weakness or predisposition toward a skeletal problem, poor muscular development and poor movement may make that problem worse.

That creates an important contradiction in the argument that doing nothing until a certain age is always the safest way to protect the skeleton. If I am trying to protect a developing skeletal system while allowing the muscular system that supports it to develop poorly, I may be working against my own goal.

That doesn't mean every skeletal problem is caused by poor muscle development. Genetics, conformation, nutrition, injury, footing, workload, growth rate, and many other factors can contribute to skeletal problems. It also doesn't mean correct training can guarantee that a horse will never develop a soundness issue. What it means is that muscular development is one of the factors that affects how the developing skeleton is supported and loaded, so it deserves to be part of the conversation.

Poor muscular development can also become increasingly difficult to change as the horse matures. Muscles strengthen according to how they are used. If a horse spends several years carrying itself in an inefficient pattern, those muscles are not sitting dormant waiting for us to begin training. Some are getting stronger, others remain weak, and the horse is becoming increasingly practiced at moving that particular way.

Eventually I am no longer simply teaching a better way to move. I am trying to change a muscular system that has become established around an old pattern while also asking the skeletal system to function differently within that new movement.

That doesn't mean an older horse cannot improve. It absolutely can. But there is a difference between guiding development and trying to change something after it has become well established.

This is why I don't believe "wait until the horse is older" should automatically be considered the conservative or safer choice. Waiting may reduce certain concerns associated with immature skeletal structures, but waiting does not stop physical development. The muscular system continues to develop. Movement patterns continue to develop. Balance continues to develop. The way the horse distributes its weight continues to develop, and the skeleton continues to experience the forces created by all of it.

If those systems are developing well, that may not be a problem. If they are developing poorly, simply getting older doesn't necessarily correct them.

At the same time, starting earlier is not automatically better. A young horse can absolutely be overworked. Immature joints can be subjected to too much repetitive stress, muscles can be pushed beyond their ability to recover, and excessive workload can create the very physical problems we are trying to prevent. The answer isn't to ignore skeletal maturity. The answer is to consider skeletal maturity alongside muscular development instead of pretending we have to choose one or the other.

There is also a tremendous difference between appropriate developmental work and hard work. The amount, intensity, duration, repetition, footing, type of movement, and individual horse all matter. The goal should be enough appropriate activity to encourage useful muscular development, coordination, balance, and good movement without overloading a body that is still developing.

That balance cannot be determined by age alone.

Age matters. Skeletal development matters. Muscular development matters. Movement matters. Workload matters. Fatigue matters. Genetics matter. Conformation matters. The horse's intended job matters.

Most importantly, those things interact with one another.

The question shouldn't simply be, **"How old is this horse?"**

The better question is, **"How is this horse developing, and what does its body need at this stage?"**

Protecting the developing skeleton is important. But part of protecting that skeleton is developing the muscular system that supports it.

The two were never meant to be considered separately.

That's horsemanship.

I'm getting lots of comments about what Tucker is doing with his head when he moves. Many people are misinterpreting this movement as lame. He has been cleared by 2 vets that he is not lame, this is what is going on.

**Irregular Movement Does Not Automatically Mean Lameness**

People often see a horse take an uneven step, travel awkwardly, or move differently in one direction and immediately conclude that the horse is lame. Sometimes the horse is lame, and that possibility should never be ignored. However, not every irregular movement pattern is caused by pain, injury, or disease.

A lame horse is altering its movement because something hurts or because a physical problem prevents the horse from using its body normally. Depending on the location and severity, you may see shortened stride length, reluctance to bear weight, changes in the movement of the head or hips, stiffness, resistance to turning, or a consistent change when a particular limb is loaded. Even then, identifying the affected area is not always as simple as watching one short video or seeing the horse take a few awkward steps.

Poor or irregular movement can have many other causes. A horse may lack balance, strength, coordination, confidence, or body awareness. The horse may not know how to organize its feet during a transition, while traveling on a circle, or when being asked to perform a movement that is difficult for it. Some horses have developed poor movement habits through incorrect training, poor posture, weak toplines, rushing, tension, or years of traveling heavily on the front end.

One movement that is commonly mistaken for lameness occurs when a horse is unbalanced and carrying too much weight on one front leg. The horse may bring its head up in rhythm with that leg as it attempts to remove enough weight from the front limb to move it forward. To an untrained observer, that head movement can look very similar to the head bob associated with some types of front-end lameness.

However, this movement may be caused by poor balance rather than pain. It is similar to what happens when an unbalanced horse throws its head upward during an upward transition. The horse is trying to lift its front end and move weight away from the shoulders, but it does not yet have the strength, balance, or understanding to accomplish that correctly through the back and hindquarters.

This type of rhythmic head movement is often seen in western pleasure horses at the lope. Viewers may say that the horse looks lame when the horse is actually extremely front-end heavy and moving poorly. The horse may be dropping too much weight onto one shoulder, struggling to stay balanced through the arc, or using the head and neck to help lift and reposition the front end.

The same type of head bobbing can also occur at the trot, especially when a horse is traveling in an arc. A horse may move relatively evenly on a straight line but become visibly irregular when circling because the inside and outside legs have different jobs. If the horse is weak, crooked, stiff, or falling through a shoulder, the head and neck may move in an exaggerated way as the horse struggles to balance itself.

This is why we must watch the complete picture of the horse traveling instead of assuming that every horse that bobs its head is lame. We need to study when the movement occurs, how consistently it occurs, what the rest of the body is doing, and whether the horse is shifting weight because of pain or because of poor balance and mechanics.

Does the horse show the same head movement on a straight line and in both directions? Does the movement change when the horse changes leads, changes direction, warms up, becomes tired, or improves its balance? Is the horse protecting a limb, or is it falling onto that limb? Is the head movement connected to the loading of a painful leg, or is the horse using its head and neck to lift a heavy front end?

It takes a skilled eye to recognize those differences. Quickly labeling the horse as lame without actually studying the movement prevents observers from learning what is happening. Once someone decides that every irregular step is lameness, they often stop looking at the horse’s balance, posture, rhythm, foot placement, and overall use of the body.

A horse can also look uneven because it is crooked. Most horses have a stronger side and a weaker side. They may carry one shoulder differently, push harder with one hind leg, drift through a turn, or struggle to bend equally in both directions. That irregularity may be something that needs to be addressed, but it does not automatically prove that the horse is in pain.

Young, green, poorly trained, or poorly conditioned horses can be especially inconsistent. They may take one good step followed by an awkward step because they have not learned where to place their feet. A horse that is weak through the back and hindquarters may move differently as it becomes tired. A tense horse may shorten its stride and brace through its body. A confused horse may hesitate, rush, throw its head, lose rhythm, or fall onto a shoulder. All of these things can create movement that looks wrong without necessarily being true lameness.

This is also important when watching horses that are in professional training. Very often, part of the reason a horse has been sent to a trainer is because the owner has been having trouble with a particular movement. The horse may be unbalanced, weak, crooked, poorly coordinated, heavy on the front end, or unable to correctly perform what the rider is asking.

The trainer is not necessarily working a sound-moving horse incorrectly. The trainer may be working to correct the poor movement that caused the horse to be sent for training in the first place. An uneducated observer may see the horse moving poorly and assume that the trainer is repeatedly working a lame horse, when the actual problem is that the horse does not yet know how to move correctly.

The movement should still be evaluated carefully. A trainer should never ignore legitimate evidence of pain, and veterinary evaluation may be necessary when the pattern, history, or physical signs support that concern. However, poor movement alone does not prove lameness. Sometimes the movement being criticized is the exact problem the trainer is attempting to improve.

This is where people need to stop guessing and start studying the pattern. Is the irregularity consistent? Does it appear on a straight line, on a circle, or both? Is it worse in one direction? Does it change with speed, footing, balance, rider influence, or fatigue? Does the horse improve after warming up, or does the movement become worse? Is there heat, swelling, tenderness, reluctance to bear weight, or a sudden change from the horse’s normal way of going?

Those questions do not replace a veterinarian, but they help us gather better information. Simply saying, “That horse looks lame,” is not much of an assessment. We need to look at the complete horse, the complete movement pattern, and the circumstances in which the irregularity appears.

We also need to be careful about going too far in the other direction. Calling every irregularity a training issue can be just as careless as calling every irregularity lameness. Pain can create training problems, poor balance can resemble pain, and incorrect movement can eventually place unnecessary stress on the horse’s body. Sometimes more than one issue is present at the same time.

The goal should not be to prove that the horse is lame or to prove that the horse is not lame. The goal should be to correctly identify what the horse needs. That may involve veterinary evaluation, farrier work, saddle assessment, conditioning, physical rehabilitation, better riding, or changes in the training program.

Irregular movement is information. It is evidence that something needs to be examined, but it is not a complete diagnosis by itself. Before we label the horse, criticize the trainer, or make a conclusion from one visible head bob, we need to slow down, study the entire pattern, and learn the difference between a horse that hurts and a horse that has not yet learned how to use its body correctly.
