A big mistake lots of new puppy parents make is taking the puppy out with them everywhere they go. Please don't. Puppies get overwhelmed and overstimulated. This can lead to deeply imprinted anxiety. The human world is a lot for them to process.

You can liken it to this: in the wild, dog pups do not go out on the hunt. They stay in the den where it is safe and quiet while the elders go out to find food. Puppies get to rest, play, and grow at home until they have developed enough strength, wit, and self control to join their pack on the hunt. When you go out it's best to secure your puppy in a crate or playpen.

Go slowly with your puppy. Do not push too much, too soon. Building trust, their sense of safety, and nice manners at home are enough for the first few months. Doing that, building their confidence and trust, will make learning everything else they need to master (ie, car rides, outdoor leash walking, trips to the vet, etc..) a lot easier on all of you.

I cannot recommend Smile Specialists enough! Non-Anesthesia ultrasonic dental cleanings in 10 minutes. $185 twice a year, versus $1000 (or more) and all the risks that come with anesthesia. My Mr Wiggly and bouncing Bela easily do it with a little trazadone given a couple hours ahead. Most dogs don't even need that. It's done in 10 minutes! Thorough cleaning with full dental report. Nicest people. Best service.

Goldie and Frenchie have been discussing many of the ideas I like to share with clients. Fundamentally puppies, just like children, need to feel safe and loved in order to develop properly. They need us to introduce them to the human world with lots of patience and kindness.

Boy, does this hit home! A dear friend recently posted about his dog that passed three years ago, talking about how his love for his dog is as strong today as it ever was. They DO teach us many important lessons. And the Love absolutely endures beyond the heartache of their passing 💗
