Routine Dental Care in Rabbits & Rodents

Rabbits and rodents are different than dogs and cats in many ways but their teeth are vastly different! They have front teeth (incisors and peg teeth) that can be easily seen and they have 22 cheek teeth (premolars and molars) that are difficult to see without special equipment. These teeth are all hypsodont teeth, meaning they continously growth throughout their whole life. Without enough hay and roughage to keep them worn down they can overgrow and often get points on their edges that can cause the animal a significant amount of pain as shown in these photos. Most Rabbits need a very minimal amount of pellets (1-2 tablespoons a day depending on size) but they need 3-4 times their body size in grass hay every day to keep their teeth and guts healthy.
Whe. The teeth get overgrown they need to be corrected. Dont worry, they dont need braces or an orthodontist though. A quick dental correction is done while the animal is sedated and the problem areas are reset to normal occlusion so they wake up feeling much better and can eat without pain again. Some animals need many corrections throughout their life and some only need one correction and then maintaining the correct diet keeps them healthy. Diet plays a major role in their dental health but genetics and conformation also influence how they chew and wear their teeth too.
Even rabbits need a yearly physical exams to ensure they are healthy and intervene before dental disease is severe enough to cut their tongue, overgrow into their soft tissues or cause them to stop eating. Ask at your next appointmwnt how the teeth look on your rabbit or rodent family pet!

You might have noticed this week a new friend around the office! Meet Shadow the hedgehog!

Shadow is at least 6 years old and he is nocturnal so he likely won't be out and active during regular clinic hours. He loves to sleep and eat. (He is our spirit animal really)

Cats are seen far less often than dogs for their yearly physical exam and wellness checkup. A yearly exam is required to legally stay compliant with the veterinary - client/patient relationship on any animal in order for the veterinarian to be able to prescribe things like medicated food, monthly parasite preventatives or other prescription medications.
Did you know that cats can also get heartworm disease by getting bit by a mosquito just like dogs? Luckily dogs have a treatment to get rid of heartworms but cats do not. Prevention is important to make sure they are flea, tick, heartworm, ear mite, skin mite and intestinal parasite free.
Rabies is a legal requirement for ALL dogs, cats and ferrets in Indiana regardless of age, breed or lifestyle status (indoor vs outdoor). Don't be caught without their rabies vaccine being current! Some of the rabies protocols in Indiana are simple with only an at home quarantine required, while others are more dire.
Talk to your veterinarian today about scheduling your cats yearly examination and getting an update on your vaccines if needed.

Dragon came to see us after he had a little accident and wasn't using his right arm. We saw on xrays a mild fracture and applied a body splint to keep the arm bones in place and not used while he healed and we also sent him with some pain medications to help with pain and swelling.
After 3 weeks the splint did exactly what it was supposed to do and the recheck xrays showed good bones! After not using his leg for 3 weeks the muscles have atrophied and he will need a little physical therapy to get him back to normal but is already using it well.
He is so happy to have the splint off and we wish him well as he continues to grow!
