Before electric motors and gas stoves, some households relied on a surprising source of kitchen power: dogs.

Turnspit dogs were bred specifically for one task—running inside a wooden wheel that turned a roasting spit. Their endless circling kept meat rotating over the fire, ensuring even cooking. These small, sturdy dogs had short legs, long backs, and remarkable endurance, making them perfectly suited for hours of relentless work.

But they weren’t family companions. They were kitchen tools—living cogs in the household machinery. Their days were filled with heat, monotony, and physical strain, and their value was purely functional.

By the 1800s, mechanical spit-turners made them obsolete. With no role left to fill, the breed faded and ultimately vanished.

Looking back, their story is jarring—a reminder of a time when using animals as disposable labor seemed unremarkable. History often holds uncomfortable truths, but those truths also reveal how much our sense of compassion has grown.
