en abandoned, neglected, abused, relinquished by their owners or just left at local shelters to await an uncertain future. We are committed to finding loving permanent homes for the Orphaned dogs in our care. Coastal is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Our mission is to educate the public about German Shepherds, their lifespan, personality, and activity level, along with overall responsible dog ownership. We also raise awareness of the overpopulation of animals through education, training, spaying, and neutering. We work very hard to match each dog with the adoptive families. All prospective adoptive families must complete an online application followed by a telephone interview and then receive a home visit before a German Shepherd is placed in their forever home.

Meet Leonard 🖤🐾

Leonard is a beautiful 1.5–2-year-old black and silver German Shepherd with a big personality and an even bigger heart.

This handsome guy doesn’t quite realize just how big he is! Leonard is friendly, exuberant, and loves being around people. Give him a play yard and he’s happy chasing a ball, doing zoomies, and showing off that classic young German Shepherd energy. He also knows some basic commands, including “sit” and “down,” and is eager to engage with the people around him.

Underneath all that enthusiasm is a wonderful gentleness. There’s a sweetness about Leonard that comes through in the way he connects with the people around him. He loves companionship and would be thrilled to have someone to share his adventures, and his affection, with.

Leonard has shown himself to be friendly with other dogs. He passed his dog-to-dog test at the shelter with dogs his size. Of course, just like with people, chemistry matters when dogs meet, so we’ll make sure any introductions are done thoughtfully to find the right fit.

Leonard came into the shelter as a stray, and we’ll never know exactly what his life looked like before then. Thankfully, we were able to save him and give him the chance he deserved.

Now Leonard is ready for the next chapter. A forever home with someone who will love his big heart, embrace all that wonderful Shepherd uniqueness, and most importantly, never give up on him. ❤️🐾

🐾 Living Their Best Life: Presley

Presley was rescued and adopted in 2021. We asked Presley’s mom to share some fun facts about life with this very good boy. Here’s what she had to say:

🎾 Ball is his life! He carries a ball around everywhere and even likes snowballs in the winter!

🏋️ His nickname is Coach Presley because he coaches CrossFit classes with his mom a few times a week.

☕ His favorite activity is going to get pup cups when the humans get their coffee.

🧸 He loves going to the store and picking out the biggest toys. He has an endless supply because he’s the sweetest boy, and after he’s done playing, he uses them as pillows.

❄️ He may be from San Diego, but he LOVES the winter. The colder, the better!

🐕 And, of course, he loves playing with his friends.

🐾 Living Their Best Life: Milo

Milo was dumped at the shelter with a serious injury to his front leg. He had been neglected, and sadly, the damage was so severe that his leg needed to be amputated.

We rescued this sweet pup and promised him we would find him a loving home where he would never be neglected again.

Milo went to a foster home to recover from surgery, and that foster home became his forever home. ❤️

His dad says, “Milo is living his best life! He’s been a transformative addition to our home and companion to his sister Emi.”

And it’s the little things that show just how special Milo has become to his family.

Those eyes: “Milo stares at me with his big, soft blue eyes.”

Can’t get close enough: “Sometimes when he lies next to me, he falls onto me and lays partly on top of me, as if he’s saying, ‘I can’t get close enough.’”

He’s a talker: “Milo talks to me with his husky howls.”

Life on three legs hasn’t slowed Milo down one bit. He’s living a wonderful life filled with love and adventure. ❤️

🐾 DOG OF THE MONTH: MEET ROSS! 🐾

Sometimes the best dogs don’t need to put on a big show to win you over. Sometimes you just need to spend a little time with them.

Meet Ross, our Dog of the Month. ❤️

Ross is one of those dogs whose personality really shines when you slow down and get to know him. As you can see in the video, he’s happy just being with his people, enjoying some attention, hanging out, and taking in the moment.

He’s a handsome German Shepherd with a presence you can’t help but notice, but underneath that Shepherd exterior is a dog who is simply waiting for someone to see him.

And that’s exactly why we chose Ross as this month’s featured dog.

Every dog at Coastal K9 has a story. Some find their families quickly. Others wait a little longer for that one special person who looks past the kennel gate and says:

“That’s my dog.”

We’d love for August to be the month someone says that about Ross. 🏡❤️

New Arrival 🐾 Meet Alvin! Update:

Little Alvin found himself in the shelter, and we felt he needed to be part of our Coastal K9 pack. We were thankful to rescue him and promised to find him a loving forever home. ❤️

For a little guy in a big, unfamiliar shelter, Alvin never let his circumstances dim his spirit. His charm and friendliness were hard to miss, and he quickly became a staff favorite, and we can see why.

Since arriving at the Ranch, Alvin has shown us that same sweet, friendly personality. He’s a unique 3-year-old GSD mix, and despite his smaller size, Alvin walks around with all the confidence of a full-size German Shepherd. 🐾

Alvin likes to play ball and is soaking up all the attention he’s been receiving since arriving at the Ranch. Maybe he doesn’t know yet that his life has changed, but from here on out, he’ll be surrounded by people who are rooting for him.

We’re excited to learn more about this charming little guy and help him find the forever home we promised him. ❤️

Living Their Best Life Series: Rose 🐾

Welcome to our new Living Their Best Life series, where we catch up with Coastal K9 alums and celebrate the life that comes after adoption, the adventures, funny moments, everyday happiness, and lots of love. ❤️🐾

So what is life with Rose like these days? We’ll let her family tell you in their own words:

"Rose “the nuzzler” is an absolute cuddle bug, she finds any excuse to curl up next to her favorite person, her 5 year old human. She is obsessed with the hose and anything water! She is very vocal and lets us know how obsessed she is! From right when she wakes up to when she falls asleep, you can find her with a ball in her mouth. Rose has been the perfect edition to our family and has helped heal our broken hearts from the loss of our GSD Sheila. 🌹"

🐾 Meet Milton! 🐾

Milton is a recent addition to our Coastal K9 pack, and we’re so thankful he’s here.

His time at the shelter was running out, but thankfully, we were able to step in and give this sweet boy the second chance he deserved.

Milton is incredibly friendly and seems genuinely happy to be starting this new chapter. He loves people and is always happy to roll over for a good belly rub. ❤️

While at the shelter, Milton was dog tested with dogs his size and did well. As he continues settling into life at the Ranch, we’ll take our time getting to know him and work on finding him a compatible playmate. Just like with people, not every dog is going to click with every other dog—sometimes it comes down to personality, energy and a little bit of chemistry!

So far, Milton is settling beautifully into his new routine, and we’re excited to learn even more about him.

Welcome to Coastal, Milton. Your second chance starts here. 🐾

Now all he needs is someone to see the amazing dog he is. ❤️
