At Baytree Animal Hospital, we are committed to providing the highest quality care for our patients and clients. To support ongoing education and team development, our hospital will be closed from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM for a staff meeting.

We will reopen at 2:00 PM and resume normal business operations.

Octomers 8th Word of the month: Keratosis!

What does “keratosis” mean?

Keratosis refers to an increase or buildup of keratin, a tough protein that normally makes up the outer layer of the skin, hair, and nails.

When too much keratin builds up, your pet’s skin may become thick, dry, rough, or scaly.

🐶 What might you notice?
• Thick or hardened skin
• Dry, flaky, or crusty areas
• Rough paw pads or nose
• Changes in the texture of the skin

🩺 Why does it happen?

Keratosis can have several causes, including chronic irritation, inflammation, allergies, infections, or certain underlying conditions. Your veterinarian can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

💡 Easy way to remember it:

Keratosis = too much keratin buildup → thicker, rougher skin.

If you notice unusual changes in your pet’s skin, paws, or nose, let your veterinarian take a look. ❤️

🔬 Why might you see this word at the vet?

You may see “intercellular” used when describing:
• How cells are arranged in tissue
• Inflammation or changes between cells
• Where certain infections or substances are found

Octobers 6th Word of the Month: Helminths!

What are “helminths”?

Helminths are parasitic worms that can live inside your pet’s body and make them sick.

🐶🐱 Common examples include:
• Roundworms
• Hookworms
• Whipworms
• Tapeworms

🩺 What can they cause?

Depending on the type of worm, your pet may experience:
• Weight loss or poor growth
• Diarrhea or vomiting
• A swollen or “pot-bellied” appearance
• Poor coat condition
• Weakness or anemia

🔎 Why are regular checkups important?

Some intestinal worms can be passed to other pets—and some can even infect people. Routine f***l testing and parasite prevention can help protect your entire family.
