As many of you know, one of our trusted partners for injured wildlife is Napa Wildlife Rescue. They work incredibly hard to provide care for our injured avian friends, but due to a recent influx in bird-related calls, there is now a two-step process for birds needing assistance.

Napa Wildlife will automatically accept birds that have:
🪺 Struck a window
🪺 Been caught by a cat
🪺 Been caught by a dog

For all other injured bird situations, we ask that you first contact Napa Wildlife so their team can evaluate the bird and provide guidance on the most appropriate next steps. After speaking with Napa Wildlife, you can then contact Humane Animal Services and we will confirm your conversation with their staff. This process helps ensure limited wildlife rehabilitation resources are prioritized for birds with the highest chance of successful treatment and release.

Before calling, please remember:
🐦 A baby bird on the ground is not always orphaned — many young birds spend time outside the nest while learning to fly, with mom monitoring the situation
🐦 Not every bird that appears injured requires intervention.
🐦 PLEASE avoid offering food or water unless directed by a wildlife professional, as this can unintentionally cause harm.

We know it can be difficult to see an injured animal and want to help immediately. We appreciate the community’s patience as local wildlife resources continue working through a very busy season. Thank you to Napa Wildlife and all rehabilitation partners for the care they provide to our wild residents every day.

We’re a little late posting, but here are our statistics for April 2026.

We have seen a significant increase in calls regarding injured wildlife. As baby season is now underway, we ask everyone to please drive carefully and stay alert for animals near roadways.

If you come across a nest or baby animals tucked away somewhere, please do not disturb them. In many cases, their parents are nearby and continuing to care for them.

If you encounter a sick or injured animal, please contact our office at 707-449-1700. Please note that if the responding officer determines the animal is not sick or injured, it will be left in its natural environment.

Thank you for helping us protect and care for the animals in our community.

Sincerely,
Humane Animal Services
