Barefoot Hoof Trimming

Barefoot Hoof Trimming Helping horses grow the hooves they were born to have! I am a barefoot hoof trimmer, primarily following methods and theories of Pete Ramey and similar.

I also offer barefoot horse care advice, because the diet, environment, exercise, etc affect the hoof and the rest of the horse. I treat every horse with kindness, love, patience, and respect. I take the time to greet/introduce myself to the horse, and I provide breaks during trimming to make the process pleasant and comfortable. I try to be fully aware of the horse and his/her preferences and abi

de by them (ie, prefers not to lift leg very high, likes hind hooves trimmed first, feels safer near a buddy, etc). I do not use a "cookie cutter" trim, as each individual hoof is different and I address it as such. I try to trim the hoof the way it "wants" to be trimmed at each particular time. I love horses, I enjoy working on hooves, and watching them (horses and hooves) improve over time. The barefoot hoof is fascinating, and there is always something new to learn with each and every horse!

It's been an unusually warm winter here in Ohio. We've been battling mud for many many months. Lots of rain. My horses are standing in deep mud nearly 24/7 :0(. I must say, though...no thrush, no scratches/grease heel, etc...amazing what barefoot and a good diet etc can help keep in check.

Seedy toe can be a minor issue that requires virtually no maintenance or it can be a serious problem affecting the vast majority of the white line of the foot.

I typically use a rat-tail file ("chainsaw sharpener") and my Swiss istor Professional Sharpener to sharpen my hoof knives

Sliced or squished, how do you like it?Dull knives are dangerous, no matter how you slice it! Whether cutting vegetables, bread, meat or trimming hooves, you need to use a lot of strength. A dull instrument can bounce and deflect, causing bloody hands for the operator. Sharp knives can be controlled

Horses evolved as wandering herbivores, moving slowly for hours and taking bites of whatever forage they came across in their rambles. Modern feeding

I’ve had the good fortune to attend four endurance events since the end of November. It is always fascinating to meet people out in the field and to see what the current practices are – for better or for worse. Listed below are the four most common mistakes I've seen in the last two months. Mistake

I have been President and CEO of EasyCare since 1993. My first area of focus for the company is in product development, and my goal is to design the perfect hoof boot for the barefoot horse.

Make sure you keep the lines of communication OPEN between you and your hoofcare provider. If you have concerns, you need to talk about them. Otherwise someone is going to be emotionally hurt sometime down the road....

We've had a lot of rain here in Ohio lately. I hate mud. Now I am welcoming the colder weather, so it can freeze the ground!
