Large or small, we float them all!

Dr. Foreman-Hesterberg is pictured here floating an aged miniature donkey. All equids—no matter their age, size or breed—benefit from a thorough oral exam and dental float every 6-12 months!

We apologize for our lack on posts recently. We’ve been very busy over the last several weeks, including working closely with the U of IL Farrier Service on cases like this Welsh/Paint pony, Suzuki!

Suzuki has chronic laminitis secondary to Equine Cushing’s Disease and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. She recently became a patient under Dr. Foreman-Hesterberg’s care in which the U of IL Farrier Service was called to help. Suzuki had an aggressive hoof trim four weeks ago and this past week she was stable enough to have wooden clogs casted to her feet. These clogs will give her hoof capsule and boney column the support and protection needed for Suzuki to continue on her journey to comfort and stability!

Pictured here are Laura Johannsen and Tobias Ellis from the U of IL Farrier Service and fourth year veterinary student Harper Nebergall.

We are all smiles this Friday after a big Illinois basketball win, and as we near the end of March, our busiest month so far this year!

A few reminders:
-Dr. Taylor will be on leave starting next week.
-Our new emergency policy as of February 1 requires that you MUST be a current established client to be eligible for after hour/weekend/holiday emergencies.
-A client is considered established when each horse under that person’s care has an up to date (within the last 12 months) wellness exam.

If you are in need of a spring wellness appointment, please call our new-to-us office line at 217-333-2000!

Gearing up for show season? Have you heard of Pro-Stride®?

"Pro-Stride® Autologous Protein Solution (APS) is a device that helps manage equine lameness and osteoarthritis in horses by concentrating the cells, platelets, growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines from a horse’s own blood." - Zoetis

Roughly 60% of equine lameness is related to osteoarthritis. Pro-Stride® uses your horse's own blood to provide inflammation relief and amplify the healing process within a joint. Here at Midwest Equine, we offer Pro-Stride® joint injections on the farm as well as during haul-in appointments!

Spring is in the air! 🌼 🩷 🐴

Dr. Taylor, Mallory and 4th year veterinary student, Kelsey, spent the day performing spring wellness visits! This particular visit included full physical exams, spring vaccines, routine lab work including Cushing’s & metabolic panels and Coggins testing, dental floats, and farrier view radiographs!

We love providing top notch care to our clients and patients while also providing hands on learning opportunities for our veterinary students!

We LOVE our senior horses, and as hard as it is to think about, a plan for end of life care is vital. If you ever have any questions about your older horses, never hesitate to discuss your concerns with one of our veterinarians. Discussions such as end of life care is one reason why wellness exams are so important!
