"Pick up your pet's waste every time."

That's not just us saying it. That's the CDC, in its guidance on roundworm.

On hookworm they go further and describe the timing: dispose of animal waste quickly to keep eggs from getting into soil and hatching.

Two separate pieces of federal guidance, and both of them describe a schedule rather than a cleanup. The reason is in the biology. Eggs and larvae need time in the ground before they become a problem, so the whole game is getting the waste out before that clock runs.

💩 That p**p in your backyard doesn’t necessarily stay in your backyard.

Here in Fruita, we live alongside the Colorado River—and what happens in our yards can eventually affect our waterways.

Here’s how:

🌧️ 1. Rain + snowmelt picks it up
When rain or snowmelt moves across your yard, it can pick up bacteria, parasites, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants from dog waste.

➡️ 2. Runoff carries it away
That water can flow into streets, drainage systems, ditches, creeks, and eventually larger waterways. Stormwater often reaches streams and rivers without going through a wastewater treatment plant.

💧 3. It ends up in our waterways
Pet waste is a documented source of f***l bacteria and nutrient pollution in surface water. EPA notes that pet waste can contribute bacteria, nutrients, and pathogens to local waters.

🌿 4. It can disrupt the ecosystem
Those extra nutrients can encourage excessive algae and plant growth. As organic matter decomposes, it can consume oxygen in the water—creating conditions that are harder on fish and other aquatic life.

🏊‍♀️ 5. And it affects people, too.
F***l contamination can make waterways less safe for recreation and can expose people and animals to harmful microorganisms. That matters for anyone who fishes, swims, boats, hikes, lets their kids play near the river, or simply cares about the health of the place we call home.

One dog. One pile. One yard might not seem like much.

But across an entire community, those piles add up.

So when we scoop the p**p, we’re not just keeping our yards clean.

We’re helping keep Fruita clean.
We’re protecting our waterways.
And we’re doing our part for the Colorado River. 💜🐾

That’s one more reason we’re proud to do what we do at Pup Pup Pick Up.

Clean yards. Healthier pets. A cleaner community.

🍁 FALL IS IN THE AIR… PLEASE DON’T LEAVE SOMETHING ELSE IN IT! 💩🐾
Regional Animal Control would like to send out a friendly reminder to our residents throughout Essex, Chester, Deep River & Westbrook: please be a courteous neighbor and clean up after your pets!
Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year in our towns. 🍂 The leaves are changing, the air is getting crisp, and more people are out enjoying our sidewalks, parks, trails and neighborhoods with their families and four-legged friends.
Unfortunately, we’ve also been noticing an increase in dog waste being left behind in public areas and along sidewalks.
💩 Your dog. Your doo-doo. Your duty!
Please remember to:
🐾 Bring waste bags whenever you head out for a walk
🐾 Pick up after your dog — every time
🐾 Dispose of bags properly in a trash receptacle
🐾 Keep sidewalks, parks, trails and shared spaces clean for everyone
🐾 Remember that fallen leaves can hide waste, but they definitely don’t make it disappear!
Nobody wants a beautiful fall stroll interrupted by an unfortunate step in the wrong direction. 😬🍁
Let’s work together to keep Essex, Chester, Deep River & Westbrook clean, beautiful and enjoyable for two-legged AND four-legged residents this fall.
🍂🐕 Enjoy the leaves. Enjoy the crisp air. Scoop the p**p. 💩

💧🐶 Did you know dog p**p can have a greater impact on water quality than wildlife waste?

Because dogs eat processed foods and are concentrated in populated areas, their waste can introduce higher levels of bacteria into stormwater systems and nearby rivers and streams -- impacting water quality, wildlife, and recreational areas.

Here’s how you can help:
• Bring a bag on every walk
• Scoop the p**p immediately
• Dispose of waste in a trash bin

Communities that adopt consistent dog waste habits see cleaner parks, safer rivers, and healthier wildlife. When communities consistently pick up after pets, parks stay cleaner, waterways stay healthier, and wildlife is better protected. Every walk is a chance to make a difference.

Dog waste left on the ground doesn’t just disappear. When it rains, it washes into storm drains that flow directly into rivers, lakes, and other waterways, polluting the water.

Once in the water, dog waste releases nitrogen and phosphorus, triggering toxic algae blooms. These blooms deplete oxygen levels, harming fish and other aquatic life. They can also be dangerous for pets, causing shock, liver failure, respiratory arrest, and even death.

Left-behind dog waste also spreads harmful bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Giardia, creating health risks for both animals and people.

The solution is simple: always scoop the p**p and dispose of it properly. A small action can have a big impact on keeping our water, wildlife, and communities safe

Your precious time is limited. Do what you love, hire a p**per-scooper.

I used to think I wanted a cleaner house.

What I really wanted was to spend less of my life *managing* my house.

Less picking up. Less putting away. Less hunting for things. Less noticing, over and over again, all the little things that needed my attention.

Because stuff doesn’t just take up space.

It ASKS things of us.

Wash me.
Store me.
Remember me.
Fix me.
Make a decision about me.

And when you’re a mom, all of those tiny requests get added to a brain that is already being asked to hold SO MUCH.

Decluttering isn't just a means to a nicer-feeling home—it's a path to a home that asks LESS of you.

So you can sit on the couch without mentally inventorying the room. 🫠

So you can listen to your kid without simultaneously thinking about the pile behind her. 🤦‍♀️

So you can spend more of your energy actually being in your life instead of tending to everything surrounding you.

--
Lately I’ve been thinking a LOT about how to make getting there require less work and less figuring-out, too.

If you’d like to see what I came up with, comment "shortcut" and I’ll send it your way. 🤍

Love,
Erica
