We asked which method is more effective when cooling a horse after exercise:

🅰️ Apply cold water and scrape off the excess 🪒
🅱️ Apply cold water and leave it on 💦

✅ The research found that while both methods lowered body temperature, horses experienced a greater reduction in body temperature when the water was not scraped off between applications.

💡 Cold water helps draw heat away from the horse's body through heat conduction, so leaving the water on between repeated applications allows the cooling process to continue.

Just want to give a shout out to Brooks Equine Nutrition, Sharpe Farm Supplies LTD, Omega Alpha - Equine, and Hoof Doctor x Equine One for making great feed, supplements, and products! Look at how healthy and shiny the horses are!!! No baths to make them shiny, no products applied to shine their coats. This is all from the inside out! Except for the hoof doctor - that goes on from the outside to the inside of the hoof! No chips or cracks!! You guys rock!!!!

With wildfire smoke affecting air quality across parts of Ontario and Quebec, it's important to remember that if the smoke is bothering you, it's likely affecting your horse as well.

Horses have an enormous lung capacity and breathe in large volumes of air. The tiny particles found in wildfire smoke can travel deep into the lungs, causing irritation, inflammation, and reduced respiratory function.

⚠️ During smoky conditions:

🐴 Avoid strenuous exercise or training.
👀 Watch for coughing, nasal discharge, or increased breathing effort.
🌡️ Monitor your horse's resting respiratory rate—it should normally be 12–24 breaths per minute.
☎️ Contact your veterinarian if you notice persistent coughing, flared nostrils, noisy breathing, abnormal nasal discharge, or a resting respiratory rate above 30 breaths per minute.

Even horses that appear healthy can experience reduced lung function and performance after prolonged smoke exposure.
