Today’s greenhouse lesson: beneficial bugs matter 🐞🌱

While clearing out an old crop, we found several ladybug nymphs hard at work. Instead of tossing them out or smooshing them 😬 (boys 🙄), we carefully relocated them to another area of the greenhouse where they can keep helping us naturally control pests.

Most people recognize adult ladybugs, but their nymphs are pest-eating machines too — especially when it comes to aphids!

Teaching the next generation to slow down, observe nature, and care for the good bugs one tiny helper at a time ❤️

Fun fact- a single lady bugs larvae can consume hundreds of aphids before metamorphosis.

For two springs now, we’ve had the sweetest little visitors hanging around the farm — a pair of Carolina wrens. 🐦🤎

Last year they decided a hanging tool bag in our garage was the perfect place to build their nest. They worked so hard carrying in twigs, moss, feathers, and every little treasure they could find. Unfortunately, nature can be hard sometimes, and a rat snake eventually found the nest before the babies could fledge.

This week, I discovered they’re back… and apparently still convinced our tools belong to them. 😂
This year they built their nest inside an old mailbox planter that I turned into a “garden tool box.” Honestly, at this point I think they officially qualify as farm staff.

A few fun facts about Carolina wrens:
• They LOVE unusual nesting spots — tool bags, flower pots, boots, mailboxes, sheds, grills, and even pockets of hanging jackets.
• Both the male and female stay together year-round, which is pretty uncommon for songbirds.
• Their tiny size is deceiving… these birds are LOUD. Their song can sound much bigger than they are.
• They’re insect hunters and help naturally control pests around gardens and farms.
• Wrens will often return to areas where they’ve nested successfully (or at least where they feel safe).

We’re hoping this year’s nest has a much happier ending. 🤎

Nature has a funny way of making a farm feel even more alive.
