🐐🐑 Breeding season for goats and sheep typically runs from September through January, with kidding and lambing occurring in the spring months. While winter is always harder on all animals, supporting pregnant females during colder months and their gestation cycle will help ensure a successful lambing and kidding season. ⬇️ Here are a few guidelines to help:

1️⃣ Before Breeding: Assess the body condition score of females ⚖️. Animals that are too thin or too fat will have difficulty being bred. Supplemental feed concentrates may or may not be required depending on body condition. Access to hay and/or pasture is more important.

2️⃣ Early to mid-gestation (first 15 weeks): Maintain body condition of mature females and increase condition of younger females that are still growing 📊. Growing females may require supplemental feed based on body condition. ⚠️PRO TIP: Feed mature gestating females and young gestating females separately if possible to prevent competition at the feeder.

3️⃣ Late gestation (last 6 weeks): 📈70% of fetal growth occurs in the last 6 weeks of gestation. Feeding a concentrate feed is most important in this stage. Typically, 0.5 lb – 1lb./head/day will support adequate nutrition in gestating females.

4️⃣ Early Lactation (First 6-8 weeks): 🥛 The highest nutritional requirements occur at this stage of production. Generally, females will require 1 lb./head/day of a well-balanced feed concentrate. If a female is nursing multiple offspring, feeding levels may need to be increased.

5️⃣ Access to hay and pasture is crucial to small ruminant nutrition throughout the entire production cycle. Increase hay from about 2.5 lbs. per day before breeding, up to 6 lbs. per day for nursing females 🍼. Homestead offers several products for both sheep and goats.
