Are you a fan of fur, slobber and the occasional “what is that smell?” Ulysses Animal Shelter is hiring a part time Kennel Attendant- aka professional treat dispenser, p**p scooper, belly rubber and all around animal LOVER.
Position Summary:
This part time position assists the Ulysses Animal Control Officer in daily operations of the Ulysses Animal Shelter. The kennel attendant provides animals with love, compassion and daily enrichment, while supporting the overall operation and maintenance of the animal shelter. This position is scheduled for approximately 15-20 hours per week; additional hours (up to 30 per week) may be required on occasion based on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, fresh water, cleaning and disinfecting kennels and food and water bowls, and changing bedding.
• Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes, and promptly report concerns to direct supervisor (Animal Control Officer).
• Administer medications as needed.
• Assist with safe animal handling during intake, examinations, treatments, or transfers.
• Clean and sanitize kennels, play areas, and common spaces to maintain a healthy environment.
• Exercise and socialize animals to promote physical and mental well-being.
• Follow all safety and disease-prevention protocols, including proper use of cleaning agents and PPE.
• Maintain accurate records of animal care, feeding, and medical notes as required.
• Provide customer service when interacting with potential adopters, pet owners, volunteers, and the public.
• Provide occasional transport for animals going to rescue, assist with adoption events and other shelter activities as needed.
• Assisting direct supervisor in animal evaluations and testing.
• Perform basic yard maintenance, including w**d whacking, spraying w**ds, clearing debris, and ensuring the property and play yards are safe and secure.
• Assist with basic building maintenance tasks, such as minor repairs, painting, organizing supplies, or reporting facility issues to direct supervisor.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Valid Drivers license
• Reliable transportation to assist with rescue transports to surrounding communities
• Must be over 18 years old
• Previous animal care, kennel, or veterinary experience preferred, but not required (training will be provided).
• Comfortable handling dogs, cats, and other small animals of all sizes and temperaments, including potentially dangerous animals.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand and walk for extended periods, and work in all weather conditions.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
• Reliable and punctual.
• Able to work occasional early mornings, evenings, holidays and weekends (We promise the wagging tails are worth it!)
• Must be able to work independently and have strong time management skills.
• Must be comfortable working in a loud environment with frequent animal noise.
Work Environment:
This is a physically active role that requires working indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. The Kennel Attendant will be exposed to cleaning chemicals, animal waste, and potential animal-related injuries.
