The Animals Are Waiting. Will You Show Up?

Right now, the halls of Tri-County Animal Shelter are unusually quiet. We are closed to the public because we are down to a skeleton crew of just our new Director, Betty, and one kennel tech. Two people cannot do the work of a village, and we cannot afford to lose our hard-won progress in increasing adoptions over euthanasia. We simply cannot do it without you.

We are calling on our community to step into the gap. Homemakers looking to sharpen office skills, we need your help at the front desk. Students aged 16 and older needing honor society hours, come make a tangible difference for the abandoned. Professionals looking to escape the corporate grind, trade your keyboard for a leash and enjoy some pet therapy. Groups looking to change the world, come spend an hour changing the world for a pair of small paws.

The animals do not understand staffing shortages. They only know their cage door has not opened for a walk or a cuddle today. Please do not just watch from the sidelines. Be the help they are waiting for.

Are you a highly organized team player who loves working with both people and pets?
Tri-County Animal Shelter is hiring a vital Office Assistant/Kennel Technician.

This unique role is perfect for someone who can effortlessly switch between administrative duties and hands-on animal care.

What You'll Be Doing:

Animal Care & Support: Providing daily care, monitoring health/eating habits, and assisting with animal intake and viewing for potential adopters and rescues.

Office & Tech Management: Utilizing your computer knowledge for record-keeping (medical, adoption, dog tags), managing data in programs like Shelterluv and Pet Finder, and handling accounts payable/deposits.( experience scanning for microchips a plus)

Customer Service: Answering phones, working with the public, completing adoption forms, and scheduling vet appointments.

Key Requirements:

Organizational skills and ability to manage detailed records.

Willingness to work weekends and holidays.( VITAL)

Physical ability to lift 50 lbs.

Must be receptive to change and a true team player.( no drama please)

New Year’s Eve: Let’s keep them safe. 🐾🎆

With fireworks less than 12 hours away, now is the time to secure your animals. While we’re celebrating, the loud booms can cause pets and horses to panic.

The Reality: Shelters nationwide see a massive spike in lost pets over the next 48 hours. When animals are terrified, they don’t think, they run. This leads to pets bolting through open gates and horses injuring themselves trying to escape their stalls or pastures.

A few quick steps before dark: Please bring dogs and cats inside to a secure, quiet room. Using a TV, fan, or radio can help drown out the noise and mask the sudden bangs. For horses and livestock, double-check that stall latches and gates are secure. Finally, make sure collars are on and your contact information is up to date.

Due to staffing shortages, our doors will be temporarily closed to the public starting today until further notice.

We know this might be concerning news, but we want to settle your hearts: Our furry residents are doing just fine.

While our front doors are closed, we have a dedicated crew coming in to help.

Every dog and cat is getting their meals, medications, playtime, and plenty of head scratches.

We are working hard to get back to full strength so we can help these friends find their forever homes. Thank you for your patience and for being such a supportive community!

To give our staff and volunteers time to celebrate with their families (and furry friends!), Tri-County Animal Shelter will be closed from December 24th to December 28th ( Don't worry they will be checked on and taken care of we just will not be open to the public)

We are also extending the $25 adoption fee till December 31st.

Keeping kennels clean and sanitized.

Feeding and watering animals.

We currently have a smaller dark brown/black senior blind dog that was brought in by Chowan County last night from around Paradise Rd.

Bagheera is giving us his best “mysterious house panther” stare and honestly it is working.

Bagheera is estimated to be around 8 month old fluffy gentleman with gold eyes and dramatic vibes, and he will be neutered before heading to his new throne at home. He claims his hobbies are supervising your streaming choices, judging your snack selections and turning any cat bed into a runway.Right now we are having a “Cat’s Name Sale” which is exactly what it sounds like: if you can pronounce Bagheera, you qualify for our 25 dollar adoption fee special through 12/25.
