"My neighbor is trying to rehome her dog because they don't have time for her. She came to them as a stray about 4 yrs ago. She was around 7 or 8 months old at the time. These are good people but she admits that she doesn't do well with animals.
When she first decided to keep the dog she had her tied out in the middle of the field. No shelter, no shade. She refused to let the dog in the house. So, my husband and I put together a pen behind a barn that she has. It is open at the back of the barn but does have a roof. This at least kept the dog dry. The poor dog has been my herself, outside, 24/7, 365 for almost 4 yrs now. She is only 30 to 40 lbs and is short-haired. They take her out occasionally but for the most part, the dog is alone. I initially asked if I could try and find her a home when she first kept her but, the mom said no, the kids want to keep her. Well, the novelty has worn off a long time ago. This is a young, busy family. They now admit that they don't have the time for her that she deserves.
They just got back from a week vacation. They asked me to take care of feeding the dog and cat. This poor dog is out in the heat panting away. The water is out in the sun. They have it in a feed bucket for horses. I think that is what it is. I believe the kids just top off the water and never change it. The food bowl was full of dirt. I cleaned everything and gave her fresh, cold water to drink. Changed it out every day I cared for her.
I also noticed that in the late afternoon the barn has only about 1 to 2 ft of shade at the back. There is very little shade overall at this time. I added a shade cloth at the top of the opening to the back of the barn to at least provide a little bit more shade.
The dog's collar was way too tight too. It was on the last hole. I bought her a new one and adjusted it so it was more comfortable for her.
The dog is also dealing with itching from head to toe. The poor thing is scratching herself along the ground and chewing at her paws. She even started crying out when she was scratching at herself. I don't know if the itching is from being bitten by all kinds of insects and/or fire ants. Or, from the kibble she is on. It is a very low quality one. She is scooting her bottom too and it is looking a little inflamed.
I did go over all of this with the owners. They are aware. They have taken her to the vet but can't figure out what is going on with her. Well, poor food quality and being eating by bugs. That is my guess. I tried to let them know it may be from her food.
This poor dog deserves someone who will give her a better life. Where she will actually get some loving. She is spayed and has her shots. Can you help in any way to get this dog out of this situation?
I can't do anything else to help. I have 5 dogs already. Two of them are also strays that ended up at this neighbor's house. I took them in, at different times, so that they wouldn't end up at the shelter and euthanized. I already had 3 of my own."
