If you ever hear me talk about Coulee, the word I most often use to describe him is “kind.” At the kennel when he’s done ripping around, he just lays nearby while I’m doing chores, or lays at my feet if I’m sitting in a chair. He doesn’t pace or busy himself. I like to say his to-do list is short and he completes it quickly.
In the gallery at a trial, he walks calmly next to me or if I sit on the ground during a pause in the course, often he’ll sit in my lap or lay down next to me. On the line he’s calmly focused, eyes on me, waiting on permission to work. I can turn around and chat with the judge without a worry. It’s a quality that rubs off on me, calming me down when my nerves are high waiting for our turn.
Temperament is genetic. You can try to mold it but whatever is programmed will eventually come out. Coulee is everything I want to see in a trial dog; fast and powerful while working, calm and collected while waiting. Add a good nose, precise marking, and unwavering connection and you have the whole damn package. And handsome to boot. I’m eager to add his genetics to my line.
