When you walk through the doors of an emergency veterinary hospital, you see a waiting room.
What you don't always see is the team behind those doors.
You don't see the CPR being performed on a beloved family member. You don't see the patient struggling to breathe, the emergency surgery happening, or the team working tirelessly to stabilize an animal fighting for its life. You don't see the technician calculating life-saving medications in seconds or the doctor making critical decisions that can mean the difference between life and death.
If your pet is waiting, we understand how frustrating and scary that can feel. But if your pet were the one in critical condition, struggling to breathe, actively seizing, or needing immediate life-saving care, you would want every available member of our team focused entirely on them. That is exactly what we promise to do for every patient who needs us most.
Sometimes, you may call or arrive and be told that we are at capacity. We know how heartbreaking and frustrating that is to hear, especially when your pet needs medical attention. Please know this is never a decision we make lightly. Across the country, veterinary hospitals are facing a significant shortage of veterinarians and support staff. A single emergency veterinarian is responsible for every hospitalized patient, every surgery, every critical emergency, and every new patient walking through the door. When we reach capacity, it is because accepting another patient could compromise the care and safety of those already in our hospital—or the care your pet deserves. It is never our goal to turn you and your pet away. Our goal is, and always will be, to provide safe, high-quality emergency care, and sometimes that means directing you to another hospital that has the ability to help sooner.
Our veterinarians, technicians, assistants, care coordintors, kennel attendants, and support staff don't choose this profession because it's easy. They choose it because they care deeply about animals and the families who love them. They are here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year—working long days, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, birthdays, and missing time with their own families so they can be there for yours. They often skip meals, stay long after their shift has ended, and carry the emotional weight of celebrating recoveries while also helping families through some of the hardest moments of their lives.
Veterinary professionals face some of the highest rates of burnout, anxiety, depression, and su***de of any profession. Yet they continue to show up every single day because they believe every patient deserves their very best.
So while you may experience a wait or be referred elsewhere, please know it is never because your pet is unimportant. It is because another family is experiencing what we hope you never have to, and our team is doing everything possible to save a life while ensuring every patient receives the attention and care they deserve.
The next time you visit an emergency veterinary hospital, we simply ask for one thing: kindness. A smile, a thank you, and a little patience can mean more than you realize to the people who have dedicated their lives to caring for the animals we all love.
