We finally made it to Manteo, NC. After five days on the road with no off-leash frolicking, this boy had a good run at the Roanoke Island Dog Park. Not a soul there but us. Grateful! 🐾💫👏🎈

A couple nights in a lovely Airbnb in the country outside of Nashville, NC as there were no state park or Hipcamp sites available. Just in from walking the trails through the property to find Keaton missing. Seems the Tub Pup has returned! 😁

"normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good, trust me."

Why yes my dog would LOVE to say hi, but I’m still going to say “no thank you” and move on. Why?

1. Because I want my dog to learn that every time we see people it doesn’t mean it’s a party for him. I’d like him to continue his focus on us together as a team and not create conditioned excitement and expectation every time we are approached by someone.

2. Because I don’t know what saying hi means to you. Will you politely touch him? Will you allow him space to move away if he wants? Will you put your face too close to his? I don’t want him to have a negative experience so I’m going to avoid that by continuing our walk.

3. Because maybe I feel overwhelmed or stressed in public places and conversations with strangers may make me uncomfortable, so even though you’d like to talk and meet my dog, I’m protecting myself too.

4. Because we’re in a rush and have to get something done quickly.

5. Because I said no. Even social, sweet, friendly dogs and their handlers have every right to say “no” to a request to meet and be touched by people. This shouldn’t just apply to reactive, worried or bubble space dogs. Dogs are not public property, and saying “no thank you” to touching my dog shouldn’t be regarded as rude or unkind, any more than if a stranger asked to hold my baby.

Please normalize hearing “no” OR even better, normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good for dogs and humans everywhere, trust me.

🛑 NO! FIDO! STOP! 🛑
Do you find yourself trying so hard to stop your dog from doing XYZ, and well it's not working as well as you had hoped?

Behavior changes more quickly and reliably, while having lasting results, when you find ways to say "yes" more than you say "no".

✅ Dog training is hugely successful when you find way to teach your dog alternate behaviors to replace the bad ones instead of trying over and over to stop or punish the bad behavior.

EXAMPLES

1️⃣ If you have a dog jumps on guests instead of punishing the dog for jumping a better solution is to train your dog to do a behavior instead of jumping. So, training Fido to lie on a mat when the doorbell rings and guests enter would eliminate his need or ability to jump on the entering guests.

2️⃣ If you have a dog that pulls on the leash instead of jerking the leash and trying to stop the pulling, give treats and rewards when Fluffy walks nicely next to you. Train her that walking on a loose leash next to you yields treats, and then sniffs to the grass to follow then she'll look forward to walks and learn that walking on a loose leash brings on good things. She'll choose that behavior every time the more she's trained to understand this.

3️⃣ If you have a dog that barks out of the window instead of punishing him for barking, teach him to settle on a mat away from the window and/or that when he sees things outside good things happen and there is no need to bark frantically.

⁉️ Are you finding ways to tell your dog yes instead of no? If not, you should start.

Every dog trainer in the world has been asked what to do when a dog doesn’t respond properly, though the wording of the query takes many forms: What should I do when my dog refuses to do what I tell her to do? My dog is so stubborn—how do I get her to do what I ask? What’s the best way to deal...

Thunderstorm season is upon us, and firework season is fast approaching. Keep an eye on this page to learn ho to help your pets stay safe and comfortable during this noisy time of year.

All animals need a place where they feel safe and can decompress. A safe zone is a special new area we’ll create together for your dog.

The important aspects of the safe zone is that it provides a place that:
Avoids sensory overload
Relatively quiet
Minimize smells/odors – if you can smell it (e.g., household cleaners), then it is likely overwhelming for the dog.
Not too bright, no flashing lights, no shiny or reflective surfaces
Creates predictability
This is your dog’s space to get away from stressful stimuli
A place your dog can choose to go to if he or she wants a break from activity
Gives them quiet time to recover from stress (a key for developing resilience)
Minimize talking, petting, or training .

Did you know that you can build a dog's ability to adapt, adjust, and recover after stressful and even traumatic events?

Resilience is mediated by adaptive molecular and cellular changes within the brain. These changes are brought about by the interaction between an individuals coping strategies and genetic makeup. While we can't change an animal's genetics, we can teach coping strategies to improve their resilience.

By using simple metrics and tools we can use an evidence based approach to monitor changes in resilience and modify our case management accordingly.

To learn more about building mental resilience, join us for a two-day seminar:

BEHAVIOR VETS TWO-DAY SEMINAR

Resilience in Dogs - What is it, why it's important, and how to build it.

Saturday July 30 & Sunday July 31, 2022
9am to 5pm EST (USA and Canada)

Neuroscientist Dr. Kathy Murphy, Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist Dr. E'Lise Christensen, and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant Bobbie Bhambree will answer these questions over the course of a two-day seminar, providing you with evidence-based approaches to assessing and building a dog's ability to adapt, adjust, and recover. This will be an opportunity to look at an important topic in behavior under a multidisciplinary lens. Whether you are an animal trainer, veterinary professional, animal behaviorist or someone interested in dog sports, there will be something here for you.

This is an online event. This two-day seminar will be recorded for those who cannot join us for the live event.
