🐠 Did You Know Sunday?

Did you know that a fish’s adult size matters more than the size it is when you buy it?

That little fish in the store may look perfect for your tank today—but some species can grow several times larger and may also become more territorial as they mature.

Before adding a new fish, always consider:

🐟 Adult size
🏠 Minimum tank size
⚔️ Temperament
🍽️ Diet
👥 Whether it prefers to live alone or in groups

At TK Aquatics, we believe in stocking for adulthood—not just today.

💬 What fish surprised you the most with how big it eventually got?

🐡 FISH FEATURE FRIDAY – POTATO PUFFER! 🥔

This week’s featured fish is the Potato Puffer (Tetraodon miurus), also known as the Congo Puffer!

⭐ Adult Size: Around 5–6 inches
🌡️ Temperature: 75–82°F
💧 Tank Size: 30+ gallons recommended
🍽️ Diet: Carnivore – snails, crustaceans, worms, and other meaty foods
🐡 Temperament: Highly aggressive / predatory
🌍 Origin: Congo River Basin, Central Africa

The Potato Puffer may not win any swimming races—because a lot of the time it’s hiding under the sand waiting for dinner! 😆

These unusual puffers are ambush predators that bury themselves in soft sand with only their eyes and mouth exposed. When prey gets close enough… BOOM! Potato attack!

Their colors can range from brown and tan to some incredible orange and red shades, making every individual a little different.

⚠️ Potato Puffers are best kept alone. Despite their funny appearance, they are serious predators and can badly injure or kill tankmates. A deep bed of fine, soft sand is also important so they can display their natural burrowing behavior.

📍 Stop by TK Aquatics and check out one of the coolest freshwater oddballs in the hobby! We have 2 available in Tulsa and one available in TK Aquatics Muskogee

Who else thinks this might be the angriest potato you'll ever own? 🥔🐡😂

🐠 TRUE OR FALSE TUESDAY! 🐠

Bettas can live happily in tiny bowls without a heater or filter.

What do you think—TRUE or FALSE? 🤔

⬇️
⬇️
⬇️

❌ FALSE!

Bettas are tropical fish that benefit from warm, stable water, proper filtration and enough room to swim and explore. A well-equipped aquarium makes it much easier to maintain healthy water conditions.

Small fish still deserve a properly sized home! 💙

🦐🎋 ODDBALL MONDAY: BAMBOO SHRIMP! 🎋🦐

This week’s oddball isn’t a fish at all — it’s the fascinating Bamboo Shrimp!

Instead of picking food off the bottom like most shrimp, Bamboo Shrimp use their unique fan-shaped front legs to catch tiny food particles floating through the water.

A few things that make them so interesting:

🪭 Filter-feeds by opening little “fans” into the current
💧 Loves areas with steady water flow
🦐 Peaceful and great for community aquariums with suitable tankmates
🌿 Appreciates plants, driftwood, rocks, and elevated spots near the current
📏 Can reach around 3–4 inches
🍽️ Needs plenty of suspended microscopic foods in the water — a super-clean tank with nothing to filter can actually leave them hungry

If you see a Bamboo Shrimp constantly scraping the substrate instead of feeding from the current, it may be a sign it isn’t getting enough food from the water column.

Definitely one of the strangest and coolest freshwater invertebrates in the hobby!

Would you add a Bamboo Shrimp to your tank? 👇
