What’s in your pet’s bowl, and why? 🐾

I’ve been diving deeper into animal nutrition lately, and Kalina’s bowl has been changing along with what I’ve been learning!

It’s made me curious about what everyone else is feeding their animals and how they came to those choices.

I’d love to hear (or see!) what you’re feeding and why. Are there things you’ve been wondering about or find confusing when it comes to nutrition?

There’s so much information out there, often conflicting, and it’s completely understandable to have questions. I’d love to hear yours! 🩵

In this episode, Dr. Megan chats with Dr. Emily Hall about her journey into veterinary rehabilitation and the experiences that shaped the way she approaches her work. Emily shares how her dog Kalina’s journey, from amputation to rehabilitation, inspired her to become a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist.

They discuss the challenges Emily faced throughout her career, the changes and pivots she made along the way, and how working in a zoo and marine-animal setting at Coral World Ocean Park gave her a new perspective on veterinary medicine.

Emily shares how these experiences, along with her return to small-animal practice, helped her develop a deeper understanding of what it means to support the physical and emotional wellbeing of the animals in her care.

Nell has come so far 💪& we are excited to see her continue to thrive after FHO surgery!

She worked through her lack of confidence, and now even has a new puppy sibling to share outside adventures with.

She still works regularly on balance and core, backups and walks are easy tasks these days!

Looking forward to continuing to see how she thrives as she stars a new journey focusing on movement through Seeking with Scent, as a beta tester of a new project that Dr. Emily has been working on🫶

Keep up the amazing work Nell, and congratulations on all you’ve accomplished!!!💕

It’s real. The talent and gifts some have been brave enough to share with their community as a small business🌸

They don’t boast or brag. You almost wouldn’t even know, because they aren’t the self promotional kind… they are just good people who have something useful to share from the heart.

Sometimes it is their side project and others, it’s their whole world… other than their fur family of course🥰

But I get the opportunity to come into the lives of pet parents that eventually share that they have a small business. It’s always a story that started from the heart🫶

Celebrating Hank’s recovery and rehab graduation 🥳

Hank’s story started earlier this year with a ligament tear in his knee. Conservative management became prehab after it became clear surgery would be better sooner than later.

Hank did wonderful through the surgery and rehab with the support of his amazing family that had prepared from the beginning with adjusting their lives during prehab.

By his family already understanding the rehab came concepts, practiced massages and stretches, as well as got the environment set up for Hank’s success- this has been the fastest and best TPLO surgical recovery I’ve ever been a part of💪

Hank is a great example of the importance of not always staying with conservative management for CCl/ACL tears. Having a veterinary rehab professional guiding the recovery to help determine if conservative is still reasonable can make a huge difference in acting at the right time or staying stuck in weekly rehab sessions forever😔

Hank and his family are the rockstars of this story, sharing the load of exercises, massages, and managed walks. Their commitment to Hank’s rehab program really showed what is possible when a family works together to support a companion they love through a difficult time🐾❤️‍🩹

Way to go 🫶

When we walk into a rehab patient’s home, this mat is usually the first thing we introduce. Let’s talk about it!

This is PEMF, or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. I put it down and turn it on as we get started, then let the patient investigate it and decide whether they want to hang out on it during their session.

One of the questions I get most often is, “Can they feel it?”

Usually, not in the way you might expect. PEMF isn’t massage, vibration, or electrical stimulation. Some animals may notice a subtle sensation, while most seem completely unaware of it.

PEMF is used to support circulation, reduce pain and inflammation, promote cellular healing, and encourage relaxation. And that last part can be particularly helpful for patients who are anxious or uncomfortable.

It’s also one of my favorite ways to start a session because it doesn’t ask the patient to do anything. They can relax on the mat while we get acquainted, assess them, massage, stretch, and work through the rest of their rehabilitation.

And as you can see, sometimes the family cat decides they need some PEMF too. 😂

It’s just one layer of therapy, and if a patient doesn’t want to use it, we don’t force it… but most enjoy it!

Rehab works best when we work with the animal, not just on the animal. And it’s fun to share with the siblings of the family often, also!

It’s another hot week here in OK 🥵

And one of the most common things I hear pet parents express lately is the frustration with the oppressive heat.

I hear things like- “it’s just too hot for walks” (correct for the most part)

“they are driving me nuts in the house, since it’s too hot to play outside” (makes sense, not their fault)

“we were seeing improvement in their strength until it got hot and we couldn’t exercise outside”… and this is where I’m a little💔😔

You see, exercise doesn’t have to be a walk outside, and really that is never enough… even on the beautiful and comfy weather days!

Movement matters & using their brain 🧠 matters- every day, balanced, individualized to that moment

We have been using this summer as Kalina’s comeback mental and physical rehab program focus towards prepping for fall. That toy has been a tool, and the stroller collapsed is part of the plan too.

We’ve significantly improved her mobility with a weight loss strategy and her mental abilities with a different kind of scentwork than you may be used to seeing. Of course laser therapy, massages, and more have been key throughout also💪

In this break between storm seasons, we’ve been really improving her noise sensitivity as a priority, which means giving her safe and comfortable opportunities to seek- not just with her failing vision but focusing back on leaning in the sense of smell
