Happy Hump Day!

Fall changes what is within reach of your pet, and a few of this season's hazards move fast. Antifreeze is the one that scares us most. It tastes sweet, animals will drink it, and signs can start within 30 minutes as it goes after the kidneys. The Merck Veterinary Manual puts the minimum lethal dose at 1.4 mL per kg in cats, which is a very small amount. Rat and mouse bait is next, since rodents head indoors when it cools off and more households put poison down. Wild mushrooms come up after the rain, and while the ASPCA notes about 99% carry little or no toxicity, the 1% that do can be life threatening, and nobody should be identifying mushrooms in a wet yard by eye. Then there is the backpack that lands on the floor in September. Glue sticks and markers are low toxicity, but they still cause upset stomachs and blockages. Keep the ASPCA Animal Poison Control number where you can find it: (888) 426-4435, open 24 hours. If you think your pet got into something, call, then call your vet. Prognosis gets worse the longer you wait. Informational only, not medical advice. Which of these is already sitting in your garage?
