🦟❤️ Heartworm Disease Doesn’t Just Affect Dogs—Cats Are at Risk Too! ❤️🦟

Did you know that just one mosquito bite can transmit heartworms to both dogs and cats?

Heartworms are dangerous parasites that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, causing serious and sometimes life-threatening damage. While heartworm disease is more commonly diagnosed in dogs, cats can also become infected—and unfortunately, there is no approved treatment to eliminate heartworms in cats once they are infected.

⚠️ Signs of Heartworm Disease in Dogs May Include:
• Coughing
• Exercise intolerance
• Fatigue
• Weight loss
• Difficulty breathing
• In severe cases, heart failure

⚠️ Signs of Heartworm Disease in Cats May Include:
• Coughing or asthma-like symptoms
• Vomiting
• Decreased appetite
• Weight loss
• Difficulty breathing
• Sudden collapse or even sudden death in severe cases

The good news? Heartworm disease is preventable!

🐶 For Dogs, We Offer Multiple Prevention Options:
💊 Monthly heartworm prevention tablets

💊 Monthly products that protect against heartworms, fleas, and ticks

💉 ProHeart® 6 – One injection provides 6 months of heartworm protection

💉 ProHeart® 12 – One injection provides 12 months (1 year) of heartworm protection

🐱 For Cats, We Offer NexGard® COMBO!
✅ Protects against heartworms
✅ Protects against fleas
✅ Protects against ticks
✅ Helps treat and control common intestinal parasites

Many cat owners are surprised to learn that indoor cats are also at risk for heartworms since mosquitoes can easily find their way indoors.

🩸 We also recommend annual 4DX Heartworm & Tick-Borne Disease Testing for dogs. This simple test requires only a small blood sample and provides results in about 15 minutes, screening for heartworms as well as Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis.

🐾 Prevention is always easier, safer, and less expensive than treating disease.

Not sure which option is best for your pet? Our team would be happy to discuss the many prevention choices we offer and help find the perfect fit for your furry family member.

📅 Now is a great time to schedule your pet’s annual wellness visit and heartworm screening!

Just look at this sweet boy! ❤️

Yancy came in for a nail trim and decided the best way to handle the situation was to sit back, relax, and let our team do all the work.

Alyssa kept him comfortable and secure while Shelby took care of his nail trim, and Yancy was the definition of a perfect patient. From lounging in Alyssa’s lap to flashing those sweet puppy-dog eyes, he made the whole process look easy!

Regular nail trims are an important part of your pet’s health and comfort. Overgrown nails can affect how your pet walks, cause discomfort, and even lead to injuries. Fortunately, many pets do great with a little patience, positive reinforcement, and lots of love from our team. ❤️

Way to go, Yancy! We think you deserve an award for being one of the most relaxed nail trim patients around!

The sunshine is out, the birds are singing, and many curious kittens are ready to explore the great outdoors! While watching your kitten enjoy the warm weather can be adorable, it’s important to make sure they’re protected before they head outside.

Outdoor kittens are exposed to many things that can affect their health, including:

🐾 Intestinal parasites (worms)
🐾 Fleas and ticks
🐾 Heartworms
🐾 Viruses that can spread from other cats
🐾 Injuries from wildlife or other animals

Before your kitten begins their outdoor adventures, make sure they are:

✅ Up to date on their kitten vaccine series
✅ Dewormed regularly
✅ On monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
✅ Tested and monitored by your veterinarian
✅ Microchipped for added safety

A little prevention now can help your kitten enjoy a long, healthy, and happy life exploring the sunshine safely! 🌼🐾

If you’ve recently added a new kitten to your family, we’d love to help you create the best healthcare plan for them.

Meet our sweet friend Maggie! ❤️

Maggie came to see us after she surprised her family by vomiting up 5 Nerf gun foam balls at home. While that was certainly concerning, her mom and dad did exactly the right thing, they brought her in immediately to make sure there weren’t any more hiding inside.

And boy, were there.

As you can see from these photos, Maggie was completely unbothered by the whole situation. In fact, the first picture is Maggie casually lying on our X-ray table without any sedation at all! She truly is one of the most laid-back patients we’ve ever met and would let us do just about anything.

📸 Photo 1: Maggie relaxing on the X-ray table.
📸 Photo 2: Her abdominal radiograph. We’ve marked several of the foam balls so they’re easier to spot.
📸 Photos 3 & 4: Dr. Nickels performing an abdominal ultrasound to further evaluate Maggie’s stomach and intestines.
📸 Photo 5: One of the Nerf balls that started this whole adventure.
📸 Photo 6: Sweet Maggie heading home after surgery the next day.

After reviewing her X-rays and confirming our concerns with ultrasound, we discovered that Maggie had swallowed many more foam balls than anyone expected. Because it was late in the day and we were concerned about a possible intestinal obstruction, Maggie was referred to a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital in Murfreesboro for surgery that same night.

The final count?

25 Nerf balls swallowed
16 Nerf balls removed during surgery

We’re incredibly thankful that Maggie’s family acted quickly. Intestinal foreign bodies can become life-threatening if left untreated, causing blockages, damage to the intestines, and even rupture. The sooner these cases are identified and treated, the better the outcome.

This is a great reminder that even toys that seem harmless can become dangerous when curious pets decide to snack on them. If your pet is vomiting, not eating, acting uncomfortable, or you suspect they may have swallowed something they shouldn’t, don’t wait give your veterinarian a call.

We’re happy to report that Maggie is recovering well and is back to living her best carefree bulldog life. ❤️🐶

Today our team spent time diving into anesthesia training and reviewing updated techniques, monitoring, and protocols to help us continue providing the safest care possible for our patients. In veterinary medicine, learning never stops and that’s exactly how it should be. 🐾

Medicine is always evolving, and ongoing training helps our team stay current on the best practices in patient safety, anesthesia monitoring, recovery care, and overall comfort for your pets. We are proud of a team that is always willing to learn, grow, and improve together. ❤️

Of course… Belle, our office cat, made sure she attended the training too. 🐱 She supervised the entire session very closely and seemed extremely invested in the discussion.

We are thankful for a team that is dedicated to continuing education and providing the best care possible for every patient that walks through our doors. 🐾
