Meet Wiggie. This little chiweenie came to me because he needed some refreshers as well as some guidance for all the new behaviors he's been presenting. I talk about how "life happens" a lot.. Well, life happened: work, school, life, and Wiggie wanted to let everyone in the house know.. In protest, he would bark at his owners endlessly for attention; became a wild child on the leash; and didn't like new people in his space; this became the new normal, and his owners were getting tired of it. Together, we worked on teaching Wiggie to settle down and be ok existing together without the need to be entertained. These behaviors will eventually bleed into other aspects of life. We're so excited to be a part of this handsome boys life!

Observation is key in dog training, and why filming yourself training your dog is so helpful.

Sometimes we forget how critical exposure can be for dogs, and that's ok. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes our environment is, too. This weekend, I needed to change things up in Baka and my routine. I was getting bored with our normal walks, and I could only imagine how bored he was getting. We headed out to the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. There were so many new sights and smells and noises. Baka was doing great for Baka, and of course, the one thing Baka was sketched out about was... a "wild" green construction cone... Honestly, that was really exciting for me! Why? This tells me, he is more or less environmentally stable, it tells me that he takes in his environment well, and his "recovery" from that oh so threatening construction cone, was beautiful. Baka is currently 11 months old; all of these behaviors are "normal" for his age. He is filled with curiosity (usually) rather than copious amounts of fear and insecurity. Watching how your dog takes in the environment and how they react to experiencing something new gives you, as an owner, a TON of information. Do something simple, film it, and watch what you AND your dog does :)

It’s a bullet, it’s a train, jk it’s a Fast CAT event! Our friends at STABLE Dog Training love to get their dog, Chaos, running super fast after a plastic bag! He’s already titled too!

According to the AKC, Fast CAT® – which stands for Coursing Ability Test – is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing a lure. It’s over before you know it — and it’s nothing short of awe-inspiring to watch your dog run at top speed, ears back, eyes focused, legs strong.

Have you tried this event? Check out the American Kennel Club for the next time this event will be in your area!

This sport dog Monday is a sport we’re all familiar with… sheep herding! The goal of the sport (vs real life) is that the courses must test the dog’s control through a gather (fetching), driving or moving stock along paths, navigating obstacles (like gates or panels), and a final penning exercise. This sport generally features border collies, but did you know that the American Kennel Club recognizes 18 herding breeds? While there’s many similarities in behaviors, the different herding breeds have very different herding styles and can be more effective on certain types of livestock. Training for this starts as early as possible to get dogs quickly acclimated to the sheep and see how strong their instincts are. With safety for all the animals as a top priority!

If you interested in seeing more sheep dogs in action there’s going to be a competition at the end of September in Alturas!
