Don’t worry you’ll get there!

I keep stumbling on this meme that’s always circulating around the internet. While it’s funny, it holds a lot of truth. Dog training is a process. Results happen over time, not overnight. There will in set backs in progress and times where all the work comes together magically in a week.

A lot of times we can forget how much a pattern of behavior can take to train - especially when we’re online and see perfectly trained dogs.

Take Baka for example! He is great in the crate, more or less pretty quite and can settle down nicely. This behavior took time, patience, lots of deep breathing exercises and anxiety. While I was transitioning from one home to another, there were some hiccups - it was a completely different picture. The car crate - it was the same thing. Baka isn’t perfect in the crate, but we’ve worked on it, in different environments for a year. In one home he was ok, in the other he was perfect. We don’t always need to see perfection, sometimes its better to acknowledge progress.

Keep up the work. Keep being consistent and more importantly keep having fun!

I hear a lot of people tell me that they free-feed their dog.

I don’t do it for a few reasons. 1) I lose the ability to use food on a dog that is full/not finding value in food. 2) it’s difficult to gauge how much the dog is consuming which can lead to weight issues.

A few years ago I hurt my shoulder playing tug with my last dog. He had tummy issues so treats weren’t always on the table. However, he still needed an outlet during the time my shoulder needed to heal. So for us, we heavily relied on his breakfast and dinner. Baka is not the most food motivated dog either, but needs to get his brain stimulated. So breakfast and dinner time is an opportunity to train and leverage an empty stomach to continue training. Young puppies are constantly eating, so using their meals throughout the day is a another way to train without the need for extra food. Treats aren’t bad, but there’s definitely other ways to keep your dog training.

Muzzle training gets a bad reputation. There’s plenty of reasons that dogs could/should be getting muzzle trained. Some dogs love the tasty goodness of “the outside”, and to prevent them from eating said things sometimes people use a muzzle. Sometimes, you do need it because the dog may not be comfortable around things and sometimes you need it for a dog sport.

As your doggie doomsday prepper here, I could use it for most of these reasons. Whatever the reason, it is one more thing for Baka to be comfortable with, in the event of an emergency.

Now that fair is over we’re back at training at home. It’s not that the training stopped, it just wasn’t as frequent. It was important to me to get my boyfriend on the same page, so we could continue progressing Baka’s training forward, and sharpen boyfriend’s skills as a handler. What did that look like? More..

More familiarity with tools
Keeping Baka under threshold
Really using marker words.
It’s important to get everyone in the household on the same page, or at least in the same book. Results aren’t going to come overnight, but, they will be noticeably different when everyone is consistent and mindful.

Apparently my lessons were too boring for 4 month old mini doxie Bella! Just kidding, she’s just a sweet baby that needs a ton of nap times. Her family wanted to get her started on the right track with her training and even get her started on some nose work! We can’t wait to watch this cutie pie grow into a nosework star!

Rise and shine on this Monday morning. The weather is clearing up, and the 75th Tulelake Butte Valley Fair is just around the corner. So what does that mean? Earlier mornings and working harder with Baka. My situation isn't unique by any means, and the beauty of dog training is that you MUST adjust to the dog/situation in front of you. Do you have a situation where what worked with one dog didn't work with your next?
