🍰 HAPPY NATIONAL DESSERT DAY!
Today is National Dessert Day, which means humans everywhere have a perfectly legitimate excuse to eat something they probably didn't need.
Your dog would also like to participate.
Your veterinarian would like to formally decline that request.
While a little dessert might make our day better, some of our favorite sweets can cause serious problems for pets.

A few things that should NOT be on your pet's dessert menu:
🍫 Chocolate: Contains methylxanthines that can cause vomiting, restlessness, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and worse. Darker chocolate generally means greater risk.
🍬 Sugar-free candy, gum, and baked goods containing xylitol: Xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar in dogs and, at higher exposures, serious liver injury.
🍇 Raisins: Yes, even when they're hiding innocently inside a cookie. Grapes and raisins can cause acute kidney injury in dogs.
🥜 Macadamia nuts: Can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and other problems in dogs.
🧁 Rich, fatty desserts: Even when the ingredients aren't technically toxic, enough butter, cream, frosting, or other high-fat foods can turn National Dessert Day into National Pancreatitis Day!
And nobody wants to celebrate that one (trust me)!

So enjoy your cake. Eat the cookie. Have the ice cream.

Just remember that the sad Labrador staring at you has already eaten dinner and is not, despite his testimony, currently starving to death.

If you want your pet to celebrate with you, stick with an appropriate pet-safe treat instead.

And if your pet manages to steal something they shouldn't have, call your veterinarian rather than waiting for symptoms to develop. What they ate, how much they ate, their body weight, and how long ago it happened can all matter.

Happy National Dessert Day from Cross Street Veterinary Hospital!
Now the important question:
What's the best dessert of all time?
We're expecting strong opinions in the comments.

Today is World Mental Health Day

There are a lot of reasons we love dogs and cats.

They make us laugh.
They get us outside.
They keep us company.
They somehow know when we need a little extra attention.
And on some days, they're the reason we get out of bed, take a walk, or simply have someone sitting beside us when we're having a hard day.

Pets don't magically make life's problems disappear.

But they have a pretty incredible way of making the difficult days feel a little less difficult.

As veterinarians, we spend our days taking care of the physical health of our patients. But we're also reminded every day just how much our pets can mean to our emotional well-being.

Sometimes it's a dog waiting at the door when you get home.

Sometimes it's a cat quietly curling up next to you.

Sometimes it's a ridiculous puppy making you laugh when you really didn't feel like laughing.

And sometimes, it's simply having another living being there who doesn't care what kind of day you had.

Today is World Mental Health Day, and we think that's worth recognizing.

Take care of yourself. Check in on someone you care about. Get outside. Take a walk with your dog. Sit on the couch with your cat.

And if your pet happens to be the one checking on you today...

Give them an extra scratch behind the ears.

They've probably earned it.

From all of us at Cross Street Veterinary Hospital - take care of yourselves, and take care of each other.

A little time away from the clinic was exactly what we needed!

Our team got together for a fun night of painting, good food, and lots of laughs. Some masterpieces, some questionable choices… but everyone had a great time! It was so nice to step away from the busy day-to-day and just enjoy some time together outside of the hospital.

A special thank you to Paint & Sip with Regan for leading our paint night and keeping us all on track with our masterpieces! 🎨🖌️

And a big thank you to IDEXX for treating our team to this fun evening at Braised Foods! We’re always grateful for opportunities to celebrate our team and spend some well-deserved time together.

YOUR DOG COULD FEEL BETTER… AND YOU COULD GO SHOPPING!

Okay, we have a pretty awesome giveaway happening at Cross Street Veterinary Hospital!

Thanks to our friends at Zoetis, every client whose dog receives a Librela injection between now and November 30 will be entered to win a $200 spending spree at Morris Levin & Son right here in Tulare!

And we especially love that this giveaway supports another local Tulare business. As a locally owned veterinary hospital ourselves, we're always happy when we get an opportunity to support another business in our community.
Shop local. Support local. And maybe take home $200 worth of something you didn't know you needed until you walked in.

Now, let's talk about the dogs.
If you have an older dog who has started slowing down, you may have noticed things like:
• Taking longer to get up after sleeping
• Hesitating before jumping onto the couch or into the car
• Struggling with stairs
• Not wanting to walk or play as long
• Generally acting like Monday morning has become a permanent lifestyle

Sometimes we hear, “He's just getting old.”
And yes, our dogs absolutely slow down as they age, but sometimes what looks like “getting old” may actually be discomfort from osteoarthritis.

Librela is a once-monthly injection used to control osteoarthritis pain in dogs, and we've seen some of our senior patients regain comfort and mobility that their families thought was simply gone with age.

Of course, Librela isn't appropriate for every dog, which is why we're always happy to talk with you about your dog's mobility and whether it may be a good option for them.

And now there's a little extra incentive to have that conversation:
Get a Librela injection → Get entered to win a $200 Morris Levin & Son spending spree.
Your dog gets the chance to move more comfortably.
You get the chance to go shopping.
Your dog will still expect you to spend at least $17 of it on treats.
Seems fair.
Give us a call at (559) 688-0631 if you'd like to talk with our veterinary team about whether Librela may be right for your dog.

Giveaway ends November 30.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS IS FOR PETS, TOO (I am saying it louder for the people in the back!)

When you hear “breast cancer,” you probably don't immediately think about your dog or cat.

But unfortunately, dogs and cats can develop mammary (breast) cancer, too.

And here's the part every pet owner should know: Spaying your female pet can significantly reduce her risk of developing mammary tumors!

In dogs, mammary tumors are among the most common tumors seen in female dogs, and the risk is strongly associated with exposure to ovarian hormones. Early/timely spaying provides the greatest reduction in risk.

Cats are even more concerning! Approximately 90% of feline mammary tumors are malignant (the BAD kind), and cats spayed before 6 months of age have been reported to have about a 91% lower risk of developing mammary tumors.

So yes, your veterinarian really does have a reason for bringing up that spay appointment.

We're not just trying to prevent puppies and kittens (but trust me, overpopulation is another post).

We're also trying to prevent cancer!

One more important reminder: If you ever feel a lump or firm area around your pet's ni***es or mammary glands, don't assume it's “just another fatty lump.” Mammary masses should be evaluated by your veterinarian. Early detection matters.

This October, let's remember that breast cancer awareness isn't just for people. It matters for our pets, too.

Talk to your veterinarian about your pet's individual spay timing and cancer risk today.

☕ Happy National Coffee Day! ☕

As veterinarians, we're often asked about things our pets should NOT eat.

Chocolate? No.

Grapes and raisins? Absolutely not.

Coffee? Also a big no.

Caffeine can be toxic to dogs and cats and may cause restlessness, vomiting, an increased heart rate, tremors, seizures, and other serious problems. So please keep your coffee, coffee grounds, energy drinks, and other caffeinated products safely away from your pets.

Now, with that important public service announcement out of the way...

We need to talk about the veterinary team.

Because apparently coffee is toxic to dogs...
..but somehow becomes a critical piece of veterinary equipment when handed to Dr. Jake and our team!

Ask him to start a workday without coffee and you'll quickly discover that this hospital's emergency preparedness plan has some room for improvement.

☕ Coffee: Not for the pets.

☕ Coffee: Absolutely for Dr. Jake.

Please drink responsibly.

And by "responsibly," we mean don't let your dog drink it.

Happy National Coffee Day from the Cross Street Veterinary Hospital team!

P.S. If your pet ever gets into coffee, coffee grounds, or another caffeinated product, don't wait for signs to appear. Give us or an emergency veterinary hospital a call so we can help determine what needs to be done.

Dr. Jake's Veterinary Truth #4: Sometimes your pet knows you need them more than you realize.

We spend a lot of time talking about what our pets need from us.

Food.
Exercise.
Preventive care.
Vaccines.
Treats.
And apparently, approximately 47 walks per day if you're a Labrador.

But here's something I've learned as a veterinarian:

Sometimes *we need them just as much as they need us*

Dogs have a remarkable ability to make you get off the couch when you don't feel like moving.

Cats have an equally remarkable ability to sit beside you when you need some quiet company.

And both seem to have an uncanny talent for showing up at exactly the right moment.

They don't care if you had a terrible day at work.
They don't care if you made a mistake.
They don't care if you're stressed, exhausted, or just having a rough day.

They just want to be with you.

Pets don't fix everything.

But sometimes a wagging tail, a warm body curled up next to you, or a ridiculous face staring at you from across the room can make a hard day feel just a little bit easier.

That's one of the things that makes the human-animal bond so special.

And that's Dr. Jake's veterinary truth.

Now excuse me while I go check on my patients and make sure they're emotionally supporting me as much as I'm supporting them!

We wanted to give a huge thank you to one of our sweet clients for surprising our team with these amazing lava cups! The team absolutely loves them!

They are already getting plenty of use around the hospital!

A special shout out to for making these awesome cups! We absolutely love how they turned out! ✨

We were missing a few of our team members when we took this picture, but they have their cups too and are just as excited about them! 💜

Thank you again for thinking of our team and for such a thoughtful gift. We appreciate it more than you know! 🐾

Dr. Jake's Veterinary Truths #3

The dog who "never eats anything weird"...

will absolutely eat something weird the moment you stop watching them!

And somehow, it will always be something we've never seen before.

Socks? Seen it.

Rocks? Seen it.

Underwear? Unfortunately, yes.

An entire loaf of bread? More than once.

But every once in a while, a patient walks through our doors and makes us say:

"Well...that's a new one."

After years in veterinary medicine, I've learned one thing:

Never underestimate a dog's ability to eat something it absolutely should not.

And yes, we've seen some things. 😂
