We are so proud of Athena for passing her Canine Good Citizen evaluation!

She is completing her basic obedience training with us where she is learning all of the skills she needs to be a well mannered dog at home and in public. She is 9 years old and proves you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

To pass her evaluation, Black Belt Canine Academy worked with Athena and her dad to achieve these ten skills:

1. Accepting a friendly stranger (calmly, no jumping)
2. Sitting politely for petting (allowing me to examine her ears and paws)
3. Appearance and grooming (owners are responsible for their dogs health too!)
4. Walking on a loose lead
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit, Down and Stay on command
7. Come command
8. Reaction to another dog (friendly and nonchalant!)
9. Reaction to distraction (unfazed)
10. Supervised separation (able to be left with a trusted person without exhibiting separation anxiety)

Tucson’s summer monsoon season brings much-needed rain—but also thunder, lightning, high winds, and pressure changes that many dogs find terrifying.

Dogs can be frightened by:
- Loud noises (thunder, wind, hail)
- Flashes of lightning
- Static electricity build-up
- Changes in barometric pressure

This fear can lead to:
- Pacing, whining, or hiding
- Destructive behavior
- Attempts to escape
- Panting or trembling
- Loss of house training

For some dogs, this escalates into a phobia that worsens with each storm if not addressed.

So how can you avoid reinforcing fearful behavior?

Stay calm and confident yourself. Petting or excessive “babying” when your dog is scared can unintentionally reward the fear. Instead, speak softly and redirect with obedience tasks like “sit” or “stay”.

We also recommend walking and going potty before the storm whenever possible.
If there’s a storm in the forecast, walk and potty your dog in advance. Many dogs refuse to go outside once thunder begins, which can lead to stress-related accidents.

And of course, secure your home:
- Close windows and blinds
- Make sure your yard gates are locked (dogs may try to bolt)
- Double-check ID tags and microchip info—the risk of dogs running away during storms is high

It’s one of those questions that comes up constantly during our dog training sessions in Tucson: “Are dog parks actually safe for my dog?”

Dog parks offer a mix of pros and cons, but as a professional dog trainer, I want to help you evaluate the real risks and rewards.

My number one rule of dog training is:

Never subject your dog to a situation you cannot control.

In a public park, you cannot control your dog, and you certainly cannot control other people’s dogs—and your dog knows it.

Summer in Tucson doesn’t just bring heat—it also brings fireworks, especially around the 4th of July and local events. For many dogs, fireworks are terrifying, leading to stress, escape attempts, and destructive behavior.

Black Belt Canine Academy's Top Safety Tips for Dogs During Fireworks:

3. Keep Dogs Indoors: Never walk your dog during firework displays. Plan walks early in the day and keep them secure at night. We can help even the most nervous pup learn door etiquette and train them not to run away.

2. Update ID Tags & Microchip: If your dog DOES manage to escape during fireworks, make sure their collar has up-to-date contact info.

1. THE MOST IMPORTANT - Stay Calm Yourself: Dogs mirror your emotions. Stay positive and act like nothing’s wrong, even if they’re nervous. It may be tempting to comfort them, but doing so is really only reinforcing their belief something is wrong. Acting normal tells them, it's okay to act normal too!
