What is New World Screwworm?

Myiasis (New World Screwworm) is a serious parasitic infestation in which flies lay eggs on an animal’s skin or mucous membranes, leading to the development of maggots that feed on tissue. Most species consume dead or diseased tissue, but the New World screwworm is far more dangerous, burrowing into healthy, living tissue and rapidly expanding wounds. Pets are at highest risk when they have open wounds, skin disease, weakness, incontinence, unsanitary housing, or spend time outdoors though indoor pets can still be affected. Signs include foul odor, enlarging wounds, draining tracts, visible maggots, restlessness, and decreased appetite; screwworm larvae may be hidden deep in tissue.

Treatment requires thorough cleaning, removal of maggots, parasite medications, antibiotics, and supportive care. Prevention focuses on keeping pets clean and dry, managing wounds and skin disease, reducing fly exposure, and using routine parasite control. Because screwworm has re‑emerged in parts of Mexico and the southwestern U.S., travel restrictions are increasing, and any suspected infestation should be treated as an emergency. Pets cannot directly transmit larvae to humans or other animals, but their infestation indicates flies are present in the environment.
