Update on Woody!

First, his name is now Waffles and he is safe in our care at Old Souls. Second and more importantly, he has a huge lesion that looks to us like osteosarcoma. He can’t use his leg and the lesion goes all the way back to his scapula. He is on lots of meds, and he’s sweet as pie, but he is uncomfortable. We need to find a vet who can examine him and determine if we can remove his front left leg and scapula to give him a comfortable life for whatever time he has left, or if we have to simply try to make him more comfortable and give him a good life for as long as we can without surgery.

What matters most to us is Waffles’ quality of life. He is an absolute joy. Nothing makes us happier than seeing him wag his tail when he sees us. He eats and drinks and potties normally, and he is house trained. He also couldn’t be sweeter despite his pain so he deserves for us to fight for his life if there is the potential for a positive outcome.

Remember, he has Valley Fever, Tick Fever, and potentially osteosarcoma. He has not had an easy life. Help us find a vet who can assess his condition and come up with a treatment plan for him, with or without surgery. Put your suggestions for vets in the comments or text them to me at 520-334-5966. I had a new little helper at work today … Ratxley, aka Ratatatouille. Not Ratatouille. Ratatatouille! He is clearly no stranger to riding in the car. He loaded up and planted himself on the console ready to go!

Before you lose your mind with excitement wanting to adopt this little monster, know this: His mouth smells like a landfill and is leaking goopy yuckiness (yes, that’s a technical term), and he is not potty trained at all. Not as cute as he was 10 seconds before you read this, right?

On today’s episode of Living the Dream, Kelly and I are enjoying our own version of pizza for dinner. Don’t judge us. When you go into animal welfare, two things you don’t expect are to be wealthy or have nice things. So sometimes you have to make something from nothing for dinner. Don’t tell Vega we used her string cheese bc we didn’t have mozzarella!

Woody is safely out of PACC and is no longer at risk of euthanasia! He got his freedom ride home to Old Souls with Kelly, and was met at Old Souls with a beautiful rainbow over the property.

We have 8 prospective foster homes for him so we are aiming to place him by Friday at the latest. He is doing great so far with the Old Souls pack.

Thank you to everyone who offered your help and support so we could bring this sweet boy home. Woody has two big bags of medicine to treat his Tick Fever and Valley Fever. His condition is quite serious and painful so we are going to place him with a foster who has a quiet calm home with people who are home all or most of the time.

When we took Ratxley home from PACC last night, we didn’t know he was separated from his sister after they were rescued. We checked on his sister today and learned she’s old and lumpy and has teeth just as bad as his (some of the most horrifying teeth we have ever seen!). So Kelly packed her up and brought her home to Old Souls where we had a wonderful reunion! Welcome home Ashuka!

This sweet boy Woody is on a medical deadline at PACC. Tuesday is his last day on earth if he doesn't find a home. Old Souls is willing to pull him if we can find a foster home. He has both Valley Fever and Tick Fever, and has trouble with his mobility because of a giant bone lesion. But staff said he has been nothing but sweet, and they are heartbroken that he is on deadline.

PACC is well beyond capacity and having to make very difficult decisions about who lives and dies. I used to be one of those people who helped make that decision when I was a Manager there. No one takes that decision lightly, and no one wants any dogs to die. But as long as the pipeline of animals coming into the shelter exceeds the shelter's capacity, this is what happens.

People always say "You can't save them all." I don't believe that. Old Souls has already pulled two dogs from PACC this week. Let's save Woody and make it three!

And he may not have long to live, so why not make his last chapter of life full of love in a home where he can get the care he deserves? Ratxley was rescued yesterday from a home, along with his 12 year old pitbull sister. Sadly, their owner was deceased and the family didn’t want them.

When this photo was sent to me to ask if I could take Ratxley into Old Souls, I couldn’t say no. I didn’t know he had a sister at the time. But don’t worry, we are checking in on her today to see if she will also fit in here at Old Souls. 💕

Finn had some dinner last night, took all his meds, and then slept through the night. Thank goodness Kelli, our wonderful volunteer and Finn’s former foster mom, came over to cuddle him. She read our minds bc we had just said that we should call her and ask her to come over. Not a minute later she walked through the door! We hadn’t even dialed the phone yet.

I can see he’s moving his head around a lot looking for the glimpses of sunlight he used to get. I wish we could have saved his vision. But I am so grateful we were able to relieve his pain.

Thank you so much to all of you who donated toward his life saving surgery. We raised $2,900! The total cost of the surgery was $3,600 so we got pretty close. We will make up the remaining $700 using regular donations throughout the next month.

I can’t thank everyone enough for your support in saving Finn so he can live a pain free last chapter of life!

Dear Goldendoodle Mom, Not only are you a breedist, but you are careless and selfish. I bet you would not have been driving like a lunatic yesterday afternoon if your doodle were in the car with you. When you nearly slammed into my car jumping into my lane and cutting me off at the Ina exit, you could have killed Finn, and Cole, and me, and who knows how many other people and pets. Guess what … if you miss your exit, there’s another one a mile up the freeway. While I would have loved the opportunity to have you be responsible for fixing my old car, I’m not okay doing that if my dogs die in the process. Finn literally had just gotten out of surgery! Next time try driving like your doodle is in the car with you, and like every other car has their own doodle inside. Then maybe you will care about risking everyone’s life. And while you are at it, carefully drive yourself to PACC to adopt a dog bc you owe that to the universe if you purchased yours.
