🔬🐾 What’s This Wednesday?! 🐾🔬

Can you guess what Dr. Goodenough found under the microscope? 👀

Hudson came to see us for a painful, non-healing wound on his left hind leg that kept coming back despite previous treatment. His family noticed swelling, discharge, and scabbing that just wouldn’t fully resolve.

While examining samples from the wound under the microscope, Dr. Goodenough identified fungal organisms consistent with 🌵 Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis).

Valley Fever is caused by a fungus found in our desert soil here in Arizona, and while many people think it only affects the lungs, it can sometimes show up in the skin, bones, or other parts of the body too.

Hudson has now started long-term antifungal treatment for the skin lesions, and we’ll continue monitoring him closely as he heals. 💙

Arizona pet parents — had you heard Valley Fever can sometimes appear as skin lesions instead of respiratory signs? Tell us below! ⬇️

HOW AND WHY DO HORSES GET ULCERS?

Equine gastric ulcers can affect any horse of any age. Up to 90% of racehorses and 60% of show horses, as well as non-performance horses and even foals are affected by equine gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers result from the erosion of the stomach lining due to a prolonged exposure to the normal acid present in the stomach.

Unlike ulcers in humans, bacteria do not appear to cause equine gastric ulcers. Instead, this condition is often a man-made disease. Stall confinement alone can lead to the development of ulcers. A horse’s feeding schedule and high-grain diets can also contribute to the development of ulcers.

Stress, both environmental and physical, can increase the likelihood of ulcers, as can hauling, training, and mixing groups of horses. Strenuous exercise can decrease the emptying of the stomach as well as the blood flow, thus further contributing to the problem.

The treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers is directed at removing these predisposing factors, therefore decreasing acid production within the horse’s stomach. Prevention of ulcers is the key in helping your horse, as neutralizing the production of stomach acid is nature’s best antacid.

Please note that the only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through a gastroscopy. An equine veterinarian should always be consulted in any case of suspected gastric ulcers to determine the best course of action and treatment for the individual horse.

Eye injuries in horses are always an emergency. Trauma, infection, severe ulcers, or a ruptured globe can become vision-threatening — and incredibly painful — in a very short amount of time. In some cases, enucleation surgery (surgical removal of the eye) is the best option to relieve pain and protect your horse’s long-term comfort and quality of life.

At Jackpot Veterinary Center, we’re prepared to respond when these emergencies happen. Our team offers 24/7 ambulatory emergency care and a fully equipped surgery center capable of handling advanced equine surgical cases — including emergency eye surgeries. We are also proud to have Tucson’s only board-certified equine surgeon on staff, providing advanced expertise when every minute matters.

Many horses recover exceptionally well after enucleation and can return to comfortable, active lives. The goal of surgery is always to relieve pain and give horses the best possible outcome.

If your horse is showing signs like excessive tearing, swelling, squinting, cloudiness, discharge, or eye trauma, don’t wait. Early intervention can make all the difference.
