Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

Dr Ciara and her team are hard at work in large animal surgery. This particular procedure was a goat castration. If not breeding them, many owners choose to have their goats castrated in much the same way as responsible dog and cat owners get their pets spayed or neutered. With regard to goats, it is a good way of reducing aggression towards other pets and people, makes them easier to handle and reduces the very strong, pungent smell that male goats produce. It is a super quick procedure, this little guy was up, trotting around within minutes of Dr Ciara finishing and a short while later he was tucking into his food.

We often have pets that come into the hospital a little nervous, then there is Pippin. Pippin had some fairly serious wounds on his chest and neck which have involved regular dressing and bandage changes over several weeks. Well, Pippin has become a firm Civano favourite, I mean look at him! In spite of everything he's been through he is still the sweetest, goofiest boy who just loves all the fuss and attention. We love you Pippin, but we do think you need to relax!! LOL ❤️

It's 'Walk Your Dog Week' from October 1st through 7th. A great excuse to get out and enjoy some quality time with your pup whilst both getting exercise and enrichment. As the temperatures are starting to drop (a little!) it's a great time of year to get out and enjoy beautiful Arizona. The goals of this week are to improve dog health, fight canine obesity, and reduce destructive canine behaviors through daily exercise. You can participate by committing to a set time or distance outside with your dog each day, visiting new parks or local trails to keep your dog mentally stimulated and post photos of your walks on social media using the hashtag Enjoy!

We know 'they can hear a treat wrapper at a thousand yards,' but how?
Dogs can hear a lot better than humans, detecting much quieter sounds from up to four times as far as we can. There is no sneaking something quietly past them and let's face it, we've all tried! They can also hear much higher frequencies, up to 45,000-65,000 Hz. (Humans can only hear up to 20,000 Hz) This is due to their specialized anatomy, including more ear muscles, allowing them to tilt and rotate their ears separately for directional hearing, longer ear canals to funnel sound, and more neurons for processing sounds.
But cats have them beat. They can hear even higher frequencies, in some cases up to 85,000 Hz, and where dogs have at least 18 muscles to control each ear, cats have 32!
It makes sense that both of these predators would have excellent hearing, their wild ancestors would have located their prey and avoided their predators with this heightened sense.
And what about loud noises? We've all seen pets flinch when someone shouts. The human ear registers discomfort at around 120 dB and pain when noise reaches about 140 dB, while a dog's hearing discomfort starts as low as 90 dB and cats around 85 dB. That certainly goes some way to explaining why so many pets are afraid of thunder and fireworks.

World Rabies Day is the perfect time to check that your pets are suitably protected from this awful disease.
In Arizona we are blessed to live amongst a diverse and spectacular array of wildlife but along with that privilege comes a responsibility to ensure that our pets don't get into close contact with these wild animals. Several species occurring in Arizona are known to be carriers of rabies, bats, raccoons and skunks being the most common. It can also occur in coyotes, bobcats and foxes. The easiest way to protect your pets is by keeping their rabies vaccines up to date. It is a requirement in Pima County in order to get your dog license, they must be up-to-date on their rabies vaccine. We are not just talking about cats and dogs either. Dr Ciara, our large animal doctor says that she always strongly recommends that horse owners keep their animals up to date on the annual rabies vaccine. When they are outside, horses can often be quite inquisitive about wildlife especially if it is behaving erratically. Rabies vaccines are not required in cows, goats or pigs, but Dr Ciara does recommend still giving it yearly to pet livestock that spends time outside. When we get emergency cases coming in to the hospital that have come into contact with wildlife or an unknown stray dog, we will often recommend the patient gets a rabies booster just to ensure they are protected. We take rabies very seriously here at Civano, if you have any questions, chat with the vet when you come in for your next appointment, they will be happy to help you.
