On Friday , one of our foster buns had a scare when he stopped eating. Furgus went into our vet and it was determined he had elevated liver enzymes.

If you’re familiar with exotics medicine, this will probably scare you into thinking about a liver lobe torsion, and you’d be correct!

Furgus had a liver lobe torsion, or a twisted liver lobe. This can happen for various reasons, but especially when the stomach distends too much, it can flip the lobe resting right next to it and cut off blood flow.

Liver lobe torsions are a life threatening emergency that is resolved with surgery. Furgus got his surgery and was a champ! This photo is him with bed head once he woke up.

A great reminder to not home treat a not eating rabbit, because you really never know the difference between a mild GI episode and something that may kill your rabbit.

Furgus’s surgery and ultrasound will cost well over 1,000 dollars for the rescue. If anyone is interested in donating, please visit our website, Avalonmicrosanctuary.org

We have so many little lop babies from our May hoarding case that it seems more important than ever to keep this information prevalent. Lop eared rabbits are continuously the most unhealthy rabbits we see at the rescue and in our clinics. They face so many breed related health issues that it is crazy how many people continue to breed them on purpose. Intervention and prevention for lops is crucial for maintaining their best quality of life. One of the best things you can do on the regular is check on and clean their ears, and bring them to their annual or bi annual vet visit to screen for any developing issues.

Treefrog could have had a much better life and health situation if he was brought into a rescue before he was succumbing to neglect and breed related health issues. So we share this for him!

This sleeping beauty of a baby boy is ready for a home of his own.

Silky is so sweet and silly, always finding the best places for a quick power nap before returning to his daily baby activities 💕

We are currently shadowbanned and our donations this month are quite low compared to our usual donations. We want to thank all of you for supporting us and ask that you help the buns in their time of need and SHARE this post to reach people who can help us! We have had the most spays and neuters that we have ever scheduled before, and it’s all because of the babies from this case!

Rabbirs can be spayed and neutered at 4-6 months of age, and for our rescue it’s a non negotiable and crucial element to complete.

Not only does it provide so many health and behavioral benefits, but it guarantees that the overpopulation they experienced ends with them.

Jerry loves eating his emeraid. He is such a sweet old boy who has been through so much. We would be thrilled to see him end up somewhere where he can eat emeraid and lounge in peace for the rest of his life 🫶💕

Jerry is neutered, vaccinated, and estimated to be 7-9 years old.
