Did you know Missouri has a veterinary museum?!?

Jefferson City is home to the first museum in the United States dedicated entirely to the history of veterinary medicine, and it is exactly as strange and wonderful as that sounds. 🐾

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Foundation Museum holds a collection that includes preserved hairballs you're actually encouraged to touch, a whalebone, jars of assorted animal specimens, and a rotating array of antique medical instruments once used on everything from horses to household pets. It's a small, unassuming museum, the kind of place that could easily be missed entirely if you weren't specifically looking for it, but it draws a steady trickle of curious visitors who leave saying it was stranger and more interesting than they expected. Veterinarians from around the state have contributed to the collection over the years, treating it less like a novelty and more like a genuine record of how far animal medicine has come.

Missouri has an oddly deep bench of specialty museums built around subjects most states never think to preserve, and this might be one of the strangest of the bunch. 🦴

❤️ Heartworm is showing up where it used to be uncommon

Veterinary experts are warning that heartworm disease is increasingly being found in parts of the U.S. where veterinarians once saw relatively few cases, with mosquito movement, climate conditions and movement of infected dogs all contributing.

🐾 Heartworm isn’t just a “Southern dog problem” anymore—and cats can get it too. 🦟❤️ Talk with your veterinarian about year-round prevention appropriate for your pet; for dogs, routine heartworm testing is important even when preventives are given consistently

Tips for enrichment for your indoor cat…..

Play: One wand toy session in the morning, one in the evening before the last meal. 15 to 30 minutes total.
Forage: A puzzle feeder or scattered kibble at least once a day instead of a bowl.
Climb: A cat tree or shelf system that lets your cat get near ceiling height.
Scratch: A sisal post at least 28 to 32 inches tall, placed near where your cat already scratches.
Watch: A window perch, ideally with a bird feeder mounted outside the glass.
Sniff: Catnip, cat grass or silvervine on rotation, a few times a week.
Rotate: Swap out toys every 3 to 4 days and store the rest out of sight.

A new national look at recent rabies incidents reports increased rabies-related inquiries and preventive treatment this summer, following several unusual exposures involving wildlife and livestock—though experts say it’s not yet clear that rabies itself is broadly increasing nationwide.

🐾 No need to panic—just do the boring-but-important stuff really well. ❤️ Keep dogs and cats current on rabies vaccination, avoid handling bats or strangely behaving wildlife, and call your veterinarian promptly if your pet has a possible exposure.

New research discussed September 19 at the Fetch Veterinary Conference found that a major reason owners decline recommended vaccines is simply that they don’t believe their individual pet needs them.

🐾 Not every pet needs every vaccine—but lifestyle matters more than “he’s mostly indoors.” 🏡🐾 Tell your veterinarian about boarding, grooming, dog parks, travel, wildlife encounters and even those occasional backyard adventures so you can decide together which vaccines actually make sense for your pet.

Today My Neighbor Veterinary Hospital and Missouri Veterinary Medical Association partnered to donate pet oxygen masks to the Lincoln County Fire Protection station on Cherry St in Troy!!! This will help them provide life-saving treatment to the pets of Troy!!!
