Adopt a Shelter Dog Month is observed every October across the United States, led by the ASPCA and other animal‑welfare groups to promote adopting dogs from shelters.
What It Is:
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month is a nationwide October campaign encouraging people to adopt dogs from shelters and rescue organizations. It highlights the millions of dogs entering shelters each year and promotes adoption over purchasing from breeders or pet shops.
Why It Matters:
Approximately 3.3 million dogs enter U.S. shelters annually.
In 2024, about 2 million dogs were adopted, while more than 334,000 were euthanized.
Adoption rates have risen slightly (from 55% in 2024 to 57% in 2025), but shelters remain over capacity.
Ways to Participate:
Adopt a dog if you’re ready for long‑term responsibility.
Volunteer at local shelters.
Foster a dog temporarily.
Donate supplies or funds.
Promote adoptable dogs on social media.
