Position Summary
The Barrel and Pole Coach is responsible for teaching riders the skills, safety habits, pattern work, and competitive strategies needed for barrel racing and pole bending. This
role supports riders of varying experience levels by developing individualized training plans, improving horse-and-rider communication, and promoting confident, safe, and sportsmanlike participation in equestrian events.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan and lead barrel racing and pole bending lessons focused on pattern work, horsemanship, timing, control, and rider position.
• Evaluate rider skill levels to create safe, effective training plans.
• Coach riders on competition preparation, strategy, arena etiquette, and mental focus.
• Condition horses through safe drills that improve strength, responsiveness, rate, and agility.
• Maintain a safe, positive learning environment and provide clear feedback on progress and goals.
• Promoting sportsmanship and responsible horse care.
Qualifications
• Previous experience competing, coaching, or training in barrel racing and pole bending.
• Strong knowledge of horse behavior, basic equine care, tack fit, conditioning, and safety practices.
• Ability to teach riders of different ages, confidence levels, and skill levels.
• Excellent communication, patience, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to identify unsafe habits or equipment concerns and correct them appropriately.
Working Conditions
This position will require evening or weekend availability for lessons, practices and clinics. The coach must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather
conditions, standing for extended periods, handling horses, setting up arena equipment, and maintaining a safe riding enviroment.
