The Light They Need to Thrive 🦎☀️

When it comes to caring for reptiles, having the right lighting is just as important as providing the right diet.

During this checkup, Dr. Baeza discussed something that many reptile owners might overlook: the difference between UVA and UVB lighting.

UVB plays an essential role in helping many reptiles produce vitamin D3, which allows their bodies to properly absorb and use calcium. Without adequate UVB exposure, even a well fed reptile can develop serious nutritional and skeletal problems.

Here’s something else worth remembering. Just because your UVB bulb is still glowing doesn’t necessarily mean it’s providing enough UVB. These bulbs gradually lose their effectiveness, so it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule, which varies by bulb type. Marking the installation date is a great way to stay on top of it!

The good news? Our little patient received a great report! With some additional attention to vitamins, calcium, and proper lighting, we’re looking forward to seeing her continue to thrive and show off those beautiful colors. 🦎❤️

Sometimes the smallest adjustments to their environment can make the biggest difference in their health.

Getting Closer to an Answer 🐶🩻

We’re back with Arthur and continuing to investigate the wound on his foot that hasn’t been responding to treatment.

This time, Dr. Baeza reviewed Arthur’s digital radiographs. One of the advantages of digital imaging is the ability to manipulate the image and take a closer look at specific areas. Most importantly, there were no visible signs of a foreign body or foreign material hiding beneath the wound that could explain why Arthur has been limping and experiencing pain.

That helps us narrow things down. With the radiographs looking clear, Dr. Baeza believes we’re dealing with an infection that simply hasn’t responded to the treatments we’ve tried so far.

The next step is a culture. Rather than continuing to guess which medication might work, a culture can help identify what’s causing the infection and guide us toward a more targeted treatment.

And with what we learned from the radiographs, a biopsy that was previously being considered no longer appears necessary.

Sometimes getting to the answer is a process of ruling things out one step at a time. Hopefully, we’re one step closer to getting Arthur comfortable and back on that foot. ❤️🐾

A Recheck With Good News 🦎❤️

This water dragon originally came to us with mouth rot, and at her recheck, Dr. Baeza was happy to see just how much better her mouth was looking.

Water dragons can sometimes repeatedly push or strike their faces against the glass of their enclosure, which can cause trauma around the mouth and leave them more susceptible to problems. Adding visual barriers like plants or covering portions of the glass may help reduce that behavior, although some determined dragons will still find a way. 😅

With her mouth looking much better, the focus now turns to the eggs she’s carrying. A decrease in appetite can occur during egg laying, and having the proper environment is especially important. Her enclosure provides a temperature gradient with a warmer area and a cooler area, allowing her to move between the two and regulate her body temperature as needed, along with proper UVB lighting.

For now, it’s all about keeping an eye on her, giving her the environment she needs, and being patient while she finishes laying those eggs. 🥚🦎

A great recheck and a big improvement from where we started!

Small Turtle, Big Care Needs 🐢🩺

This little girl came in for a checkup, and while she may be small now, there’s plenty for her owner to prepare for as she continues to grow.

One of the biggest conversations during this visit was proper care at home. As turtles grow, their enclosure needs to grow with them. Keeping their water clean is especially important, and even a good filtration system doesn’t completely replace regular water changes and proper tank maintenance.

Dr. Baeza also noticed changes that he believed were related to a vitamin A deficiency. Nutrition and proper supplementation can play a major role in a turtle’s development, which is why getting their diet and environment right from an early age is so important.

The good news is that her owner is learning exactly what she needs, and with some adjustments to her care, hopefully this little girl won’t stay so little for long. 🐢❤️

And apparently she’s very sweet with her owner. Strangers might want to keep those fingers to themselves. 😂

A Much Needed Beak Trim 🐦✂️

S’mores came in today with a beak that had become significantly overgrown, and it was time to get things back where they needed to be.

An overgrown beak isn’t only a cosmetic concern. A bird relies on its beak every day to eat, groom, climb, and interact with its surroundings. When the beak becomes too long or grows abnormally, even something as basic as eating comfortably can become more difficult.

A careful trim helps restore a more functional shape and gives S’mores a much easier time enjoying those meals again. ❤️🐦

Changes in the length, shape, or growth of your bird’s beak are always worth paying attention to. Sometimes an overgrown beak can also be a sign that there’s an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
