I understand circumstances change. People lose jobs. People get divorced. People become sick. Families move. Children grow up. Financial situations change. Sometimes people genuinely can not keep their horses anymore.

But the responsibility doesn't end when the horse leaves your property.

The nice person standing in your driveway does not guarantee your horse's future.

And "they promised they would take good care of him" does not guarantee your horse's future.

Once that horse changes hands, you may have no idea where he goes next. And that is exactly why RESPONSIBLE rehoming matters.

We need more education before people purchase horse's.

We need people to understand that a horse is not a disposable hobby.

A horse can live for decades. That means buying a horse isn't a commitment for this season, this child's childhood, or until the next horse comes along. It is a commitment to an animal’s life.

We also need better resources for owners who genuinely can not keep their horses. We need responsible surrender programs. We need better adoption screening. We need more transparency in horse sales. We need education about auctions and slaughter buyers. We need euthanasia assistance for horse owners. And we need stronger protections against animal neglect.

70% of horses sold at auction are sold to a kill buyer. 7 out of 10 horses are destined for slaughter.

The Fate of Camp Horses in our Country

My heart aches more this time of year, for I know that Summer is coming to an end, and the fate of hundreds of camp horses in our country will end tragically. From local children camps, YMCA , Boy and Girl Scout programs, Dude Ranches, Resort’s...hundreds of equines from these programs end up at auctions or kill pens. Sometimes truck loads of them. Not a care in the world, or ounce of hesitation from some of these facilities/camp owners or brokers who lease these equines. They wipe their hands clean. We do not own them, not our responsibility.

Unfortunately, this happens often. Horses are leased out to many camps. At the end of Summer, camp horses are taken back by these suppliers and sent straight to auction or kill pens. Why? These commodity driven individuals do not want to spend the money to home these loyal companions over the winter months. These equines that devote themselves all summer long to these camps are dumped like trash at the end of Summer.
I was stunned and could not process why someone would not try, even make an effort to find them loving homes.

When will someone hold these camps just as accountable? If they have this throw away mentality, and parents continue to turn a blind eye and send their children there... then it will never end. Camp horses are special, for these devoted and loyal companions protect our children, walk hundreds of miles on trails in all conditions, teach hours of lessons, and instill countless memories created for children.

What can I do?

People ask me all the time, what can I do? We need to educate others on what is happening to our equines every year. Call local camps in your community, ask them some of these important questions.

1. Do you own or lease your camp horses?
2. What happens to these horses at the end of Summer or when they become injured?
3. What steps do you take to ensure the proper care and nutrition of these horses? For example, rest time, protection from the heat and sun.
4. Do you offer opportunities for the public to purchase or lease one of the camp horses at the end of Summer?
5. Do you have any affiliation with animal support groups or agencies that check on your horses?
6. Do you have protections for the children while attending a your Summer camp for horses? Ask.

If we do not, then we have failed these camp horses just like their owners did. We need to bring awareness and promote the programs that do provide lifelong care.

The average horse lives between 25 and 30 years — but some keep going well into their 40s, and the ones who do carry a particular kind of presence.

Caring for an old horse is different from caring for a young one. The urgency of training fades. The competition goals fall away. What's left is simpler and, in some ways, more demanding: the daily work of keeping an aging animal comfortable, known, and not alone.

Senior horses need their diet adjusted — less rich grain, more easily digestible forage. Their teeth change shape with age, making it harder to chew long hay, so soaked beet pulp and senior feeds become staples. Their joints stiffen in cold weather; many benefit from turnout on mild days, gentle exercise, and anti-inflammatory support in the hard months. Their immune systems become less robust, and regular veterinary dental care matters more than ever.

But what they give back cannot be measured in metabolic terms.

An old horse knows you. Not just your routine — your moods, your hesitations, the particular sound of your footsteps coming down the aisle at dusk. They have learned you over years, and they carry that knowledge in the way they turn their head when they hear you coming. In the way they exhale when you rest your hand on their neck.

They give patience, presence, and a quality of stillness that younger horses haven't earned yet.

How to help Wild Horses right now...

The recent revelations about federally protected wild mustangs ending up in the slaughter pipeline under the Trump administration have rightfully outraged people across the country.

But I hope the outrage doesn’t stop with the mustangs.

Because horse slaughter is not a new problem in America, and it is not limited to wild horses.

In 2025 alone, 25,128 horses from the United States were exported across our borders to be slaughtered — 21,430 to Mexico and 3,698 to Canada.

The United States may not currently slaughter horses for human consumption on American soil, but that doesn’t mean horses from this country aren’t being slaughtered. Tens of thousands are transported across the border to Mexico and Canada and killed there instead.

And many of those horses once lived in someone’s care.

They come from every imaginable background. Horses used for riding. Horses used for racing. Horses used for competition. Horses used for breeding. Horses used for labor. Horses used to haul camp kids around. Horses that were once wild. Horses that were loved once. Horses who have never known human kindness in their lives. They all can end up in the same terrible place. On that same terrible truck.

And when they could no longer provide what was wanted from them, too many became disposable.

We see what happens when horses outlive their perceived usefulness. They age. Their bodies break down. They develop chronic medical needs. They can no longer fulfill whatever purpose humans assigned to them.

And suddenly, when humans can no longer benefit from a horse’s body, that horse goes from being considered valuable to being treated as a financial liability.

But responsibility for another living being does not disappear because money changes hands.

Selling a horse when they become old, injured, inconvenient, or no longer useful does not erase responsibility for what happens next. Passing them along does not magically guarantee their safety. And sending them through sale after sale or auction after auction can put them one step closer to the slaughter pipeline every time.

That is why outrage over horse slaughter also needs to include a much harder conversation about a culture that treats horses as commodities whose value is tied to their usefulness to humans.

And when a horse can no longer fulfill the purpose someone assigned to them, too often the response is simply to sell them and replace them with another.

The wild mustangs being betrayed right now deserve every ounce of the outrage surrounding their fate. They were supposed to be federally protected, and what has been uncovered demands accountability.

But their story should also force attention onto the thousands of other horses whose deaths never become headlines.

A horse should never have to be useful to a human being in order for their life to have value.

They are not equipment to be upgraded.

They are not inventory to be replaced.

They are not disposable.

They are sentient individuals whose lives — and bodies — belong to them.

Their lives matter when they are young and when they are old. When they are healthy and when they are injured. When caring for them is easy and when it becomes difficult or expensive. Their value does not rise and fall according to what a human being can get from their body.

Ending horse slaughter requires ending the mentality that makes horses disposable in the first place.

That means confronting irresponsible breeding. It means confronting industries and individuals who continually produce and exploit horses while accepting little responsibility for where those horses ultimately end up. And it means rejecting the idea that selling a horse absolves someone of responsibility for their future.

Because the slaughter pipeline doesn’t begin at the border.

It begins much earlier — with a culture that teaches people that when one horse can no longer provide what they want, they can simply replace them with another.

The New York Times has brought the horse slaughter pipeline into the national spotlight - but this story is about so much more than wild horses.

This is not something that began with one administration, and it is not something that will disappear with the next.

For years, vulnerable horses have been bought, sold, traded, and moved through this system where their value is ultimately decided by their meat price and a price tag.

Thoroughbreds, Burros, Racehorses. Amish horses. Trail horses. Family horses. Show horses. Breeding horses. Wild Mustangs.
Funneled into one pipeline.

We are so grateful to The New York Times for exposing what too many people never see. To educate our communities because we believe every life matters.

For generations, horses have stood beside people through war, agriculture, transport, sport and everyday life. Yet thousands of American horses still enter a pipeline that can ultimately take them across international borders for slaughter.

Many Americans assume horse slaughter effectively ended when the last U.S. slaughter plants handling horses closed nearly two decades ago. But while horses are not currently being slaughtered commercially for human consumption inside the United States, American horses can still be exported to Canada and Mexico for that purpose.

Now, supporters of the **Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act** are renewing efforts to close that route permanently.

The proposed federal legislation would prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States and seek to stop horses being transported or exported abroad for slaughter.

At present, the situation is more complicated than a straightforward nationwide ban. Congress has repeatedly used annual appropriations provisions preventing federal funds from being used to inspect horse-slaughter facilities. Because federal inspection is required for meat to enter commercial markets, this has effectively prevented domestic horse-slaughter operations from functioning.

However, those funding restrictions have to be renewed — and they do not themselves prevent American horses from being transported across the border.

That is the gap supporters of the SAFE Act want to close.

Animal-welfare advocates argue that horses entering the slaughter pipeline can face lengthy transportation, repeated changes of ownership and uncertain conditions before eventually reaching slaughter facilities outside the United States. They believe a permanent federal law would provide much stronger protection than relying on funding provisions renewed by Congress.

Opponents and some horse-industry groups have raised another concern: what happens to unwanted or unaffordable horses if slaughter and export are completely prohibited?

They argue that without sufficient alternatives, rescues and sanctuaries could become overwhelmed and some owners may struggle to find somewhere for horses they can no longer keep.

Supporters counter that slaughter should not be treated as the solution. They instead call for responsible breeding, stronger rehoming networks, retirement programs, owner assistance and humane veterinary euthanasia when a horse has reached the end of its life.

What if we asked the old horse in Heaven about the best moments of his life? Do you think he would talk about the ribbons he won or the points he earned? No.
He would talk about the hours you spent grazing him and playing with his mane.
He would talk about your kind hands.
He would talk about the sound of your car when you pulled up to the barn, knowing you had a bag of carrots for him. He would talk about the laughter of the child who trotted for the first time on him.
He would talk about how their little hands gave such gentle pets on his nose. He would talk about the times you came out in the middle of a snow storm to make sure he was okay.
He would talk about the time you stayed up all night with him when he was sick and scared and confused.
He would talk about the times you cried on his shoulder, and while he didn’t know why, he understood.
He would talk about galloping through green pastures and playing with his friends.
He would talk about naps in the sun.

And finally, he would talk about when he was hurting so much in this earthly existence, you set him free.
He knows the decision literally broke your heart in half, but his pain was over and he will greet you again when it is time.

Cherish the small moments with your horses. They are what he remembers.

Somebody took this mare to AUCTION.

Now Fighting Chance Rescue is tasked with doing WHAT HER OWNER SHOULD HAVE DONE for her.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR OLD, INFIRMED, CRIPPLED HORSES/PONIES TO AUCTION.

If you cannot financially handle the expense OF DOING THE RIGHT THING for your old, infirmed, crippled equine CALL US. We WILL help you.

She Deserves Peace

This pony mare has been at an auction.Why was she there in the first place ?💔

It is heartbreaking to watch horses become trapped in the auction pipeline, passed around and compromised by greedy people looking to profit from them not end their suffering . This horse should never have been at a sale.

We don't know how many times she has been sold, how many hands she has passed through, or how long she has been waiting for someone to finally see her as more than a dollar amount.

Our hope now is to end this mare's suffering — without causing her any further pain.

She deserves compassion. She deserves dignity. And most of all, she deserves a peaceful end to a life that has already asked far too much of her.

Sometimes rescue isn't about saving a horse to ride, train, or adopt out.

Sometimes, giving a horse a Fighting Chance means being there to make sure they don't have to suffer anymore. 🥊💔
