Thank you for visiting the SPCA of Hancock County! Founded in 1911, the SPCA of Hancock County, Maine, is a life-saving organization committed to providing shelter and care for abandoned, stray and surrendered animals. Since opening the doors of our expanded facility in Trenton in October 2010, our organization has found homes for thousands of dogs and cats. We are also focused on community outreach and education on proper and humane animal care. Due to the pandemic and concern for the safety of our staff and volunteers, all visits to the shelter are by appointment only. Please contact us to schedule an appointment to adopt, surrender a pet or stray animal, or with any other requests. We are accepting donations of pet food items, pet supplies, and anything you might find on our Amazon Wish List. These can be left at our front door or by the Volunteer Entrance. These entrances are regularly checked by staff for any dropped-off donations. If you're interested in volunteering with us, we would love to meet you. We have a great need for volunteers to help with general house-cleaning tasks around the shelter, help with animal care of dogs and/or cats, assist with groundskeeping and maintenance, perform public outreach at events, collecting bottles and redeemables from the vendors that donate to us, and so much more. This little one is already excited over the catnip! FeeFi here, and his brother, FoFum, are still a touch too young to be in our adoption area so they are enjoying wrestling together in our intake kennels. When they get going, it sounds like a couple of giants wrestling in there, which is how they got their names. FoFum isn't as interested in catnip and was a bit more camera shy - you may see the tinsiest bit of an ear in the bed.

Meet Manny, Baked Bean, and the shortest glimpse of Tuff! These three 5 month old mixed breed pups are looking for homes of their own. We are not sure of what their lives were like prior to coming to the shelter, but we do know that they are terrified of leashes. Manny and Baked Bean have spent time in a home and have progressed wonderfully, but it is time for them to find their place in the world! Tuff is having a harder time realizing that people are fun and have treats so we are looking for a special foster for him. This little kitten wants to see if gravity still works so badly. Too bad that glass is impeding her physics experiments! We are open from 12 - 4 Tuesday through Saturday. Come meet Flea and see if you can help support her scientific work by providing her all of the things to knock off of ledges in your home!

Dwayne would like to personally thank the gentleman who dropped off the bag with all of the tennis balls. He has also petitioned the staff here at the SPCA to give him all of those tennis balls at once.

The cat is IN the bag: or, let's talk about enrichment. What is enrichment? Providing stimulating activities or spaces for animals in human care to improve their mental and physical wellbeing. It is very important and does not have to be complicated. This is one of our Director's cats, Mac, enjoying some catnip in a paper grocery bag. Simple, right? And he LOVED it. Other ways to enrich your cats lives can be to provide a perch for them near a window so they can look outside and watch insects or birds (or even build them a catio if you are feline fancy!), cat grass, or making "treat bombs" with toilet paper tubes and treats. We do things like this with the cats (and dogs!) at the shelter and it definitely helps to keep their minds active!

Sometimes, we love to be wrong. Meet Flash! Flash was adopted in June of 2025 after 500 days in the shelter. Flash was VERY shy, and we weren’t sure he would ever be a lap cat. LOOK AT HIM (and his amazing family!) PROVING US WRONG! Love and patience in a wonderful home have given this handsome boy all of the confidence in the world! We are so happy for you, Flash!

Join us on Sunday, September 13th for the 3rd Annual Critter Cruise! The weather is looking gorgeous, and the boat “The Acadian” will go along the shoreline of Bar Harbor so we can view Egg Rock Lighthouse. We’ll seek out harbor seals, porpoises, and eagles. An Acadian Boat Tours naturalist will narrate the tour with history and anecdotes. The boat will stop in the bay during the last portion of the cruise to watch the sunset just before 7 p.m.
