Experience, Growth, and the Future of the Maine C**n
At ReallyC***s, our passion has always been about one thing above all else: continually improving the overall health and well-being of our Maine C**n bloodlines. Every breeding decision we make is guided by years of hands-on experience, careful observation, and an unwavering love for this incredible breed.
One thing that sets us apart is that we don’t believe there is only one “right” vision of the Maine C**n. We respect other catteries and the goals they have for their breeding programs. Whether someone is passionate about the dominant blue eye gene, shaded bloodlines, traditional colors, or exciting new colors that emerge over time, every breeder has their own vision of what they hope to accomplish. Diversity in ideas is part of what helps a breed continue to evolve.
Our philosophy has always been to breed from experience—not solely from what textbooks or online articles tell us. Books are valuable learning tools, but they are written by people and often reflect the knowledge available at the time they were published. Genetics is constantly advancing, and there is no substitute for what we witness firsthand, year after year, raising and evaluating our own cats.
One topic that often sparks debate is white Maine C***s and hearing. We proudly breed pure white Maine C***s and have gained years of firsthand experience with them. A common belief shared online is that blue-eyed white cats automatically have a much higher chance of being deaf. While there is documented research showing an association between white coat color, blue eyes, and congenital deafness, our own experience has also shown us that many blue-eyed and even heterochromia (odd-eyed) kittens have had perfectly normal hearing.
On the other hand, we acquired a beautiful white boy years ago with light yellow eyes—a color many people assume carries less risk—yet he has hearing differences. Even so, he responds to different tones, enjoys life to the fullest, and is treated just like every other member of our family. We wouldn’t change him for the world. His life reminds us that every cat is an individual, and assumptions don’t always reflect reality.
It is also important to remember that as breeders, we are always striving for “perfection” in health, structure, and temperament. However, we must also acknowledge a simple truth: even when two perfectly healthy, genetically sound animals are paired together, nature does not always guarantee a perfect outcome. We are working with living, breathing creatures—not machines. Despite all proper testing, careful planning, and responsible pairing, genetics can still express itself in unexpected ways. This is not failure, but rather a reminder of the complexity and beauty of life itself.
It’s important to recognize that personal experience and scientific research both have value. Research helps us understand patterns across large populations, while firsthand experience reminds us that individual cats don’t always fit every statistic. Responsible breeders should consider both as they make thoughtful decisions.
Unfortunately, the breeding community can sometimes become divided over who is “right” and who is “wrong.” Fear and criticism can spread quickly through social media, but we believe respectful discussion and an open mind move the breed forward far better than arguments ever will.
If history has taught us anything, it’s that everything evolves. Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution remind us that change is a natural part of life. Look at photographs of Maine C***s from 20 years ago, and you’ll see cats that often look quite different from many of today’s show winners. Twenty years from now, the breed will likely continue to evolve again. Change is inevitable, and with responsible breeding, thoughtful health testing, and continued education, it can be a positive thing.
