One Smart Dog I come to you! Basic training, behavior issues, owner-trained service dog assistance, puppy training - start early! Hello. My name is Meghan Giacopelli.

We relocated to Missouri when I was 13 years old. My passion for dogs and their behavior started when I was having trouble with bullies in my teens. My parents got me a puppy to help with the depression I was experiencing. His name was Sam and he loved me. He listened to me. He was my best friend. I knew he was listening by watching his body language. I was an Oncology Nurse for several years before I moved to dog training. A lot was changing in nursing at that time and it just wasn't what I loved about it anymore. I first started working at the local animal shelter as a volunteer. I worked mostly with dogs that were unsocialized and had other behavior problems. In a couple of years I became the shelter's Animal Care Specialist. I was in charge of the animals' mental and physical well being, as well as the shelter's adoption counselor. A couple of years later I accepted the General Manager post. I loved the job, but I wasn't able to spend as much time one-on-one with the dogs. That is why I decided to do private, in-home dog training, where I feel I can be of most help to dogs and their owners/guardians. My favorite dog related reading is The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D. She is my favorite animal behaviorist. She also has published important booklets. I learned a lot about separation anxiety with I'll Be Home Soon and The Cautious Canine for dogs that have fear issues. Meghan Giacopelli -

*** What to do if you see a dog in a hot car***

Write down details: Note the car's make, model, color, and license plate number.
Alert nearby businesses: Ask managers or security guards to make an emergency public announcement to find the owner.
Call authorities: Contact local animal control or the police non-emergency line immediately if the owner cannot be located.

Leaving a dog in a parked car is extremely dangerous and can cause fatal heatstroke in just a few minutes, even with the windows cracked or the car parked in the shade.
Why It Is Dangerous
Rapid temperature spikes:
When it is 70°F outside, a car's interior can reach 89°F in 10 minutes and over 108°F in 40 minutes.
Poor cooling ability: Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat efficiently and rely mostly on panting to cool down, making them overheat much faster.
Severe health risks: High temperatures quickly lead to brain damage, multi-organ failure, and death.

Signs of Heatstroke
Heavy, excessive panting or difficulty breathing
Thick drool or excessive salivation
Bright red or dark purple gums and tongue
Weakness, dizziness, stumbling, or collapse
If you are dealing with an immediate emergency, please call 911 or your local animal control right away.

***Temperatures are only going to get higher this coming week. Here are some tips to keep your dogs cool and safe.***

Do not leave your dog in the car even with a cracked window or in the shade. Keep them safe at home or with a human in an air conditioned vehicle.

Walk your dog only in the early morning or late evening when the ground and air are cooler.

Test the pavement with the back of your hand; if it is too hot for you, it will burn your dog's paws

Set up a shallow kiddie pool or a gentle sprinkler in the yard for water play.

Freeze treats inside a Kong toy or give your dog a lick mat to keep them occupied in the AC.

Practice indoor obedience training or play hide-and-seek with treats to burn mental energy.

Drop a few ice cubes into your dog's water bowl to keep the water chilled throughout the day.

Provide a cooling mat or damp towel in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

Do not shave double-coated breeds, as their fur actually protects them from overheating and sunburn.

Look out for warning signs like heavy panting, excessive drooling, glazed eyes, or weakness.

Move an overheated dog immediately into the shade or air conditioning and wet their underside with cool water.

Contact a vet right away if your dog shows severe signs of heat stress.

We have been active! We had a graduate that chose not to be on Facebook, but it was a great experience and I was so impressed with how well he did. 😀
We also worked with a client and their dog regarding nipping. And other cases of behavior and house training issues. We are hoping for more gradute photos soon! 😃
