Something for owners of 6 month old puppies-

I was talking with a client the other day about her six-month-old puppy.

She told me her puppy had started having more accidents in the house, was struggling to settle, and seemed to be making more poor choices than she had been a few months ago.

Her question was one I hear all the time:

“Did my puppy regress?”

And my answer was probably not what she expected.

Probably not.

Because in my experience, puppies often don’t regress nearly as much as we think they do.

What often happens is that the puppy starts doing so well that we relax management.

We stop watching quite as closely.
We give more freedom around the house.
We stop using the playpen as often.
We stop tethering.
We stop creating as much structure.

And then our puppy starts making puppy decisions.

The truth is that a four-, five-, or six-month-old puppy is still very much a puppy.

They’re becoming more independent.
More curious.
More confident.
More interested in the world around them.

And sometimes they’re given freedoms they’re simply not ready to handle yet.

So before you assume your puppy has forgotten everything you’ve taught them, ask yourself:

Did my puppy change?

Or did my management change?

Because often the answer isn’t starting over.

It’s simply returning to the structure that helped your puppy be successful in the first place.
(Not my post but worthy of consideration)
