This horses tongue was nearly cut off at some point in his life. Be careful people!

TONGUE INJURIES
“There are many ways tongue injuries can happen, including rough use of a bit, or tying with reins and the horse pulling back,” says Freckleton. A horse wandering loose with a bridle, dragging the reins, may step on a rein and jerk his head up, cutting the tongue with the bit. “Occasionally a trainer lets a young horse wear the bit for awhile in the stall, to get used to the feel of a bit. If the horse snags the bit on something, this could cause severe injury.”

This is a poor horse with an owner/boarding barn owner ( Ga***rd Equestrian Center) that noticed severe weight loss and eating issues over the weekend. Low and behold she had a fractured molar that was lacerating her cheek... I was able to extract the tooth on her right side and half of a molar on her left that was also fractured. The pictures don’t really show how bad it was. The red circle is the laceration in her cheek caused by the fractured tooth. No idea how horses do this?? I have seen it multiple times. Glad it was caught early. She will do fine once everything heals up.

More pics of cutting the incisors to help her eat more easily.

Hoof wall resection before and after. This horse had a chronic crack in the hoof wall that would not get better despite the farriers efforts. Resection and another farrier and you can see the results. Likely a chronic case of white line disease. 7 months start to finish. Thanks go to Patrick Smith, PJ's horse shoeing for the farrier work.

These are photos of several hoof wall resections that were done due to some fairly severe cases of white line disease.

Here is the latest information regarding EHV-1 from the State Veterinarian of Michigan:

This is being sent on behalf of the Michigan State Veterinarian, Dr. James Averill.

EHV-1
As of May 20, Michigan has not had a case of EHV-1 since April third. The total number of EHV-1 cases reported in Michigan for 2015 has remained at four: two cases at a farm in Livingston County and two cases at a farm in Saginaw County. All premises under quarantine have been released as horses at the premises were found to either have undergone 21 consecutive days without fevers and signs of illness compatible with EHV-1 and subsequently tested negative for EHV-1 or to have undergone 28 consecutive days without fevers and signs of illness compatible with EHV-1.
