Rare “mutualistic feline behavior” has local college experts in a whirlwind.

A farmer said he first knew something was wrong when his barn cat stopped coming home for milk. The cat had followed the same routine for years, but suddenly he was hunting at strange hours and slipping into the same patch of woods over and over. When the farmer checked his trail cameras, he saw the reason. His cat was carrying mice to a thin, injured mountain lion that looked too weak to hunt on its own.

Wildlife officers were called, and the mountain lion was safely taken in for treatment. Local college animal behavior experts later weighed in, saying the footage was extremely unusual because the cat appeared to return repeatedly, keep a careful distance, and still leave food close enough for the mountain lion to eat. One professor said, “That kind of repeated behavior is hard to ignore. It makes you wonder how much animals notice when another animal is struggling.”

Every soup needs a friend

Wildlife researchers were stunned after a trail camera captured what appeared to be a polar bear allowing an Arctic fox kit to share its den through an entire winter.

Deep in a remote northern wilderness, winter arrived early, covering the landscape in snow and forcing animals to find shelter wherever they could. Most young Arctic foxes rely on their families to survive the brutal cold, but one small kit appeared to be completely alone.

That’s when a trail camera overlooking a den recorded something nobody expected.

An adult polar bear was seen approaching the den entrance, and close behind it was a tiny Arctic fox kit. The little fox stayed near the bear as they disappeared into the shelter together, a scene that left researchers searching for answers.

At first, experts assumed the fox was simply following the larger animal in desperation. A young fox facing an Arctic winter alone has little chance of survival, and nobody expected a polar bear to tolerate such a close companion. Yet the footage showed no signs of aggression. The bear calmly entered the den while the fox followed right behind.

Months later, after the harshest part of winter had passed, the same camera captured another remarkable moment.

The Arctic fox emerged first, now much larger and healthier than before. A short time later, the polar bear stepped out of the den as well, noticeably thinner after spending the winter sheltered inside. Instead of running away, the juvenile fox remained nearby, moving comfortably around the bear as if the two had shared the same refuge for months.

When researchers reviewed earlier footage, they noticed the polar bear had repeatedly returned to the den carrying food before winter fully set in, suggesting it had prepared the shelter long before the storms arrived.

Nobody knows exactly how the fox survived the season or why the polar bear allowed it to stay. But whatever happened inside that den, the footage suggests the young Arctic fox entered winter alone and somehow emerged with an unlikely guardian by its side.
