The Rainbow Run is a color fun run/walk and fundraiser that celebrates Northern Michigan’s incredible trail systems while supporting and uplifting Up North Pride. Whether you’re running, walking, or simply cheering others on, it’s a wonderful opportunity to come together and enjoy one of the area’s most beloved outdoor spaces.

🌾 Hidden Summer Hazard Alert: Foxtails 🌾

They may look like harmless grass seeds, but foxtails can cause serious emergencies for pets.

These barbed seed heads can:
🐾 Work their way into paws
👃 Get lodged in noses and airways
👂 Travel deep into ear canals
👁️ Injure eyes
🩺 Even migrate under the skin and cause infections

Signs to watch for:
• Sudden sneezing fits
• Excessive paw licking
• Head shaking
• Squinting or eye discharge
• Swelling or draining tracts on the skin

After walks, hikes, or time in tall grass, give your pet a quick “foxtail check”—especially between the toes, around the ears, and under the collar.

The sooner they’re found, the better. Left untreated, these tiny seeds can become a big emergency.

🎣🐾 Harvey's fishing trip didn't quite go as planned...

Harvey was transferred to Bay Area Pet Hospital after finding himself in a bit of a sticky situation — with a fish hook lodged in his throat! While we appreciate his enthusiasm for outdoor adventures, fish hooks are definitely not a recommended snack.

To safely remove the hook, Harvey was sedated and intubated to protect his airway. Dr. Rogers was then able to carefully manipulate and remove the fish hook without any complications. 🎉

After a successful procedure, Harvey woke up feeling a little groggy, a little sleepy, and a whole lot more comfortable. Before long, he was headed home with his family to continue his recovery.

🎣 A reminder for pet owners:
If your pet swallows or becomes hooked by fishing gear, do not try to remove it yourself. Fish hooks can cause significant damage to the mouth, throat, esophagus, or stomach if handled improperly. Prompt veterinary care gives your pet the best chance for a safe outcome.

🏕️🐾 Camping season is here, and for many pets, that means adventure is calling!

Whether you're headed to the campground, the lake, or your favorite Northern Michigan trail, a little preparation can help keep your furry family members safe while making memories outdoors.

Before you pack up the camper, remember:
✔️ Bring plenty of fresh water
✔️ Keep pets on a leash or under close supervision
✔️ Pack any medications they may need
✔️ Check daily for ticks
✔️ Avoid letting pets investigate wildlife (especially porcupines!)
✔️ Know where the nearest emergency veterinary clinic is located

While camping can be a blast, we often see emergencies related to fish hooks, porcupine quills, heat exhaustion, toxic foods, and wildlife encounters during the summer months.

A little planning goes a long way toward ensuring your camping trip is memorable for all the right reasons. ❤️

Porcupine season is in full swing here in Northern Michigan 🦔🐾

Over Memorial Day weekend alone, here at BAPH, we treated 41 pets for porcupine quills — and we’ve already seen more than 163 quilled patients during the month of May!🤯

If your pet has an encounter with a porcupine:
• Please do not cut them. This makes them harder to remove
• Prevent pawing at the face or rubbing
• Seek veterinary care as soon as possible

Quills can migrate deeper into tissues and cause pain, infection, and complications if left untreated.

We are open 24/7 for emergency care if your furry friend finds themselves a little too curious about local wildlife 💙
