Has your dog had the Lepto vaccine?

The Lepto vaccine helps prevent your pet from becoming seriously ill from a bacteria called Leptospira. Once infected, your pet may have a different array of symptoms that make it hard to tell it from other causes of illness until later stages. It can be hard to prevent having your pet exposed to it in the environment and even harder to treat, so the best course of action is to protect your pet by vaccination.

On Monday, August 31st we will be welcoming Dr. Laura Alexander to the WVG team!

Dr. Alexander was born and raised here in Southern California. She moved to Missouri and received her degree from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. After a few years in Southern Illinois at a mixed animal practice she came back home. She has an interest in dentistry and internal medicine. She is also certified in veterinary acupuncture for cats and dogs by CuraCore Veterinary Academy. In her free time she enjoys painting, relaxing at home with her cat Ev, learning new dog tricks with her dog Fezzik, and tending a small garden for the gecko.

There is nothing better than a sweet cold treat on a hot summer day. This goes for both two-legged and four-legged family members!

Here is a recipe for a sweet, simple and icy cool treat for your pup:

Mix 1 cup of plain yogurt, ½ cup of blueberries and a few strawberries together in a bowl and pour into a popsicle mold. Afterwards leave it in the freezer for a few hours to solidify. Once frozen, you can treat your pet to this delicious treat! 🍧

Have you ever wondered if you should do more for your pet’s dental health? Have you wondered if you are supposed to brush your dog or cat's teeth? Luckily, there are a few different product types you can use to improve and maintain their dental health. There are pet-specific toothbrushes and toothpastes that you can use if your pet allows you to brush their teeth. If not there are still a few helpful options. If your pets like treats, there are dental treats or dental sticks. If that isn’t an option, there are water additives you can add to your pets water bowl. If you aren’t sure about what is best for your pet, call your vet for their recommendations. We hope your pet's smile continues to shine and their breath fresh.

What is summer without a family BBQ? BBQs can be a fun way to spend time with your friends and family and this includes your pets too! To make sure everyone has fun, here are a few reminders to keep your pet safe.

-To prevent burn injuries, supervise your pet around the hot grill and hot coals. Alternatively, place a gate around the grill to keep them out of reach.

-Having a sturdy trashcan with a lid is helpful so that your pet doesn’t get into items that can cause injury or obstruction such as discarded corn cobbs, peach pits, skewers and soiled foil or napkins.

-When sharing a snack with your pet, keep in mind that onion, garlic, grapes and greasy foods can be toxic to pets. Safe snacks in small amounts would be blueberries, strawberries, plain grilled veggies like zucchini, and unseasoned lean meats.

With a little preparation, BBQs can be fun for everyone- fur and all!

Please be aware that we are having a new A/C unit installed tomorrow, Thursday, 7/16/2026. This installation requires a crane to be in our parking lot, which is expected to be on-site between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM.

During these hours, please park across the street at the Torrance Crossroads Shopping Center. Please use extra caution when crossing the street to get to the clinic.

The weather is heating up and so it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with the signs of heatstroke and how to prevent it in our pets. Signs vary from panting, drooling, and weakness, worsening to possible diarrhea, vomiting, strokes and even collapse. Being left in a car on a hot day is one way to easily overheat your pet, so we do not recommend leaving your pet in the car, no matter how short of a time. Ensure your pet has areas of shade and water access at your home. Avoid walking, exercising and hiking at peak heat times of day, instead opt for early morning or early evening. If you suspect your pet is experiencing heatstroke, bring your pet to a cooler area immediately and call your closest vet.

Like people, cats can develop arthritis. And just like people, it can cause a lot of pain and diminish quality of life. Since cats can’t tell you what’s wrong, you can look out for subtle signs of arthritis. This can include but is not limited to walking more stiffly, slow to stand or sit and lay, plays less, acts aggressively when touched among other symptoms. Although it can’t be cured it can be managed. During an exam, you and your vet can create an individualized plan to care for your pet. This may be a new diet, weight loss, oral or injectable medications, acupuncture or physical therapy to name a few treatment types. You can’t stop arthritis but you can increase your pet’s quality of life and happiness!
