October is National Pet Wellness Month. This month is to remind all pet owners about how to keep their pets healthy and happy.

For example, preventative care such as annual exams, vaccines and yearly testing can prevent issues from arising or find any issues early. Preventing flea infestations with medications or lessening the risk of certain viruses with vaccines helps keep your pet well. Finding issues early leads to earlier treatment which then leads to better health outcomes.

Vaccinating against rabies is still recommended by most veterinarians since it is a serious and life-threatening disease. If an animal starts to show signs of rabies disease there isnā€™t a treatment to save the pet. This is why vaccination is so important when it comes to rabies. Although it is rare for a domestic pet to contract rabies, it can and does happen with devastating consequences.

Keeping your pet up to date on this vaccine is the best way to prevent the risk. If you are unsure if your pet is up to date, call your vet today!

We just keep on growing! Welcoming our newest WVG member on October 21st, Dr. Rudeen!

Dr. Taylor Rudeen was born and raised locally in San Pedro. She attended Fairfield University in Connecticut for her undergraduate studies and played volleyball there for 4 years. She graduated with her Bachelor's of Science in Biology.Continuing her education, she attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine on the island of St. Kitts and Nevis, then moved to the Pacific Northwest where she completed her clinical year at Oregon State University.

She has interests in surgery, dermatology, and internal medicine. Dr. Rudeen spends her free time reading, hiking, stargazing, watching live music, traveling with her fiance, and quality time with her 2 cats, Shrimp and Toast (both adopted from St. Kitts)!

Has your vet recommended you bring in a stool sample for your pet? Do you know what they are testing for?

When your vet sends out a stool sample to the lab, they are checking for intestinal parasites. Intestinal parasites include but are not limited to hookworms, roundworms, coccidia or giardia. These parasites can cause diarrhea, vomiting and weight loss.

Puppies and kittens or pets with compromised immune systems can have more serious symptoms if not treated. Luckily, once the f***l test is run and the intestinal parasite is identified, the proper antibiotics or dewormer can be described to treat it. Thatā€™s the scoop on p**p!

Has your dog had the Lepto vaccine?

The Lepto vaccine helps prevent your pet from becoming seriously ill from a bacteria called Leptospira. Once infected, your pet may have a different array of symptoms that make it hard to tell it from other causes of illness until later stages. It can be hard to prevent having your pet exposed to it in the environment and even harder to treat, so the best course of action is to protect your pet by vaccination.
