Happy Early Birthday Dr. Mike (5/9/26).

Not a day goes by without thoughts of you here at Western Veterinary Group. You have touched many lives, human and pet alike and are forever missed.

Spring’s been here and flowers are in full bloom…and allergies too. Just like us, your pet can be allergic to plants, pollens, dust and molds out in the environment. Allergies can be very uncomfortable for your pet and many times home treatment is just not enough.

At the vet, your pet will be examined thoroughly and samples may be taken to see if any bacteria, yeast or fungi are present and a possible contributor to your pets symptoms. They may be prescribed topical sprays, specialized mousses or shampoos, oral medications and/or injections. What is prescribed will be what is most effective at treating your pet’s condition.

If you have concerns about any new symptoms in your pet, call your vet today!

Dear Valued Clients at Western Veterinary Group,

I hope this message finds you and your pets well. I am writing to share an important personal update with you. I will be stepping away from my role at Western Veterinary Group and taking some time away from clinical practice. My last working day will be April 16, 2026.

This decision was not made lightly, as it has been a true privilege and honor to care for your pets and be a part of their care team. I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me, and I will cherish the relationships we have built together.

I want to reassure you that your pets will continue to receive exceptional care at Western Veterinary Group. The team of doctors here are highly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated. I have full confidence in them and trust that they will continue to provide the same level of attentive and high-quality care that your pets deserve.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. I truly appreciate your support and understanding during this transition.

Thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your pets’ lives. It has meant more to me than I can express.

Warm regards,
Dr. Rachael Strauss

Today marks the 18th year anniversary of becoming Western Veterinary Group. It has been 18 years since Dr. Mike turned his vision into reality, “to improve the lives of pets and their owners.” Today we thank our wonderful clients for trusting us to provide excellent care for their pets. We also thank our staff for keeping Dr. Mike’s memory and vision alive.

Happy Anniversary!

Have you ever wondered if your cat actually likes you or just… tolerates you? Well here are a few signs to look out for and you will know the answer!

If your cat….rubs/head butts you, kneads on or around you, purrs when you pet her, brings you gifts (yes that dead mouse he brought you is quite the honor), licks/grooms you, sleeps nearby, or follows you from room to room; they love you!

Does your dog give you a smile when you get home from work? If this smile shows front teeth, their expression and body calm, it may be what’s called a “submissive smile.” This smile is their way of showing you that they aren’t a threat and are open to socializing with you or others. When your dog is excited, has a circling/wagging tail and wiggly body and mouth open, this is more of a “happy” and content smile. Your dog may learn that when they make one of these expressions that they get more attention, love and treats, so they will do it more often, strengthening your bond.
Happy Bonding!

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month! Imagine your dog ate a whole box of chocolates that they snuck off the table. Or perhaps your curious cat snook a few bites of your salmon bowl that was marinated in a garlic and onion sauce? Or your pet is limping and you are eyeing your OTC pain pills, wondering, “can my dog take this like I can?” Or your cat is coughing and sneezing right after sprinting out of the bathroom you just bleached. In all of these scenarios, all the items mentioned above are toxic to your cat and dog. If this occurs outside of your vet's regular business hours, it’s good to have the Pet Poison Hotline number on hand. When you call, you speak to a professional well versed in all things toxic for your cat or dog. The information they give you can be immensely helpful to your vet if they recommend you get immediate care. The more you know about seemingly innocent foods and products in your home, the better to keep your pet happy and safe.
