Happy Labor Day weekend!

Topsham Veterinary Wellness Center will be closed Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor Day. We’ll be back to our regular hours on Tuesday, September 8th.

If your pet needs emergency care while we’re closed, the following hospitals will be available:

If you do need emergency care, we recommend calling ahead whenever possible before making the trip.

🍂 September is here, but flea and tick season isn’t over yet!

As we head toward cooler weather, it can be tempting to think it’s time to put away the preventatives. Unfortunately, fleas and ticks don’t follow the same calendar we do!

Take a look at the temperatures from right here in the Brunswick/Topsham area last fall and winter. 👀 Every date shown in red was warm enough for ticks to potentially be active — including quite a few days in December, January, and February!

And yes, that includes our indoor cats! 🐱 Fleas and ticks can make their way inside on people or other pets, so staying protected can benefit even the cats whose biggest outdoor adventure is watching the world from a windowsill.

Keep those preventatives going as we head into fall, and as always, reach out if you have questions about what’s right for your pet. 🐾🍁

A gentle reminder to please be kind to our team. 💛

We know that having a sick or injured pet can be stressful, and that it can be frustrating when we don’t have an appointment available. But we want you to know one thing with certainty: we love your pets, and we are always doing our very best to serve you and get your pet the care they need.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we simply don’t have room in the schedule. When that happens, it isn’t because we don’t care or don’t want to help. We’ll always do our best to find an appropriate option, whether that means fitting your pet into our schedule or directing you to another facility that can provide the care they need sooner.

We understand that worry can bring out big emotions. We just ask that you remember there are caring people on the other end of the phone and behind the front desk who are genuinely trying to help.

We’re all here for the same reason: we love your pets and want the very best for them. A little kindness toward the people working hard to care for them means more than you know. ❤️

🦇 We’ve been getting lots of calls about bats recently, so it seemed like a good time for a quick Bat PSA!

If you or your pet may have been bitten by a bat, even if you cannot find a bite wound, please treat it as a potential rabies exposure and act promptly.

🐾 For pets: Contact your veterinarian right away. Your pet needs to be evaluated, and a rabies booster WILL be needed as soon as possible, even if they are currently vaccinated. If we are not available, please contact an urgent care or emergency veterinary clinic.

👤 For people: Contact your healthcare provider or public health authorities promptly to determine whether you need rabies post-exposure vaccination.

🦇 And save the bat if you safely can! Avoid direct contact, safely contain it, and contact Animal Control. The bat may be able to be tested for rabies, which can help determine what follow-up is necessary.

Don’t wait for symptoms or an obvious bite. Bat bites can be very small and difficult to see, so suspected exposure is enough reason to make the call.

We love our local bats and the important role they play in our ecosystem. We just want everyone, two-legged and four-legged, to enjoy them safely. 💕

Effective immediately, missed appointment fees will apply to technician appointments, just as they already do for doctor appointments.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, just let us know in advance and there is no fee.

If we don’t hear from you until after your scheduled appointment time, a missed appointment fee will apply.
